Velma Lorene [Laney] Rainey
April 27, 1928 ~ February 10, 2010


Shhhe was born April 27, 1928, in Oswego, Kansas to Elza Clyde and Hazel Vera [VanSickle] Laney.

She passed from this life on Wednesday, February 10, 2010, at Shanoan Springs Nursing Home, Chickasha, Oklahoma, following a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Rainey's father was an oilfield worker who was transferred frequently, so she lived in a number of places before graduating from high school in Ponca City.

She went to Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia, Kansas, where she received a Bachelor's Degree in Music.

She was a member of Winnetasha, Sigma Alpha Iota, Sphinx, Band, Symphonic Chorus, and the Emporia State Players.

She and Charles Roland Rainey were married on April 8, 1950, in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

She taught band and music for 36 years in Kansas and Oklahoma, the last 27 years at Verden Public Schools.

After she retired she joined her husband in his custom harvesting business and drove a truck. She belonged to the Retired Teachers Association, the Art Guild, and the USAO Chorale. She was an accomplished oil and acrylic painter.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, who died January 31, 2002, and also by an infant sister.

Survivors include two daughters, Charlsie McDuffey and husband Terry of Anadarko, and Alicia Fant and husband David of Mulberry, Arkansas; one son, Tom D. Rainey and wife Janelle of Lake Eufaula, Oklahoma; step-children, Charles Rainey of Fort Worth, Texas, Wanda Eslick and husband Don of Comanche, Oklahoma; and Joyce Love of Weatherford, Texas; three grandchildren, Tara McDuffey of Anadarko, Jared McDuffey of Brooklyn, New York, and Misty Harris of Midwest City, Oklahoma; step-grandchildren Rolanda Legg and husband John David , Beverly Hughes, Cynthia Hughes, Jerry Paul Stafford, Angelique Lytle and husband Brian, Tammy Hutchinson and husband Arly, Dale Love and wife Angie, Tiffany Love, Charles Rainey Jr., Dena Rainey, Dana Stewart, nineteen great-grandchildren, several cousins, and many loving friends, former students and co-workers. Also surviving are Chris Davis and Herschel Olinger, who were her loving caretakers for 6 years before she entered the nursing home.

Funeral service 2 p.m. Monday, February 15, at the 1st United Methodist Church of Anadarko, with pastor Tracy Schumpert officiating.

Burial will follow in Fairlawn Cemetery, Chickasha.

Viewing from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday, from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. Sunday, and 9 a.m. until noon Monday at Steverson Funeral Home.
