November 9, 1954 Oscar Ellison Owensby September 5, 1910 ~ November 9, 1954 Oscar Ellison Owensby was the second of three children born to Jesse Allison and Mabel Engle Owensby. He had an older brother and a younger sister. Oscar was known as "Buddy" and in later years went by his initials O. E. Owensby. He entered school at age four in second grade. He began high school at age 12. In his youth he was a swimmer, boxer and played football and basketball. He followed in the footsteps of his parents and paternal grandmother when he chose to go into the field of education. He attended the Kansas State Teachers College in Pittsburg, Kansas. Like his father before him, Oscar became a school teacher, principal and superintendent. He saw the schools in Grady, Oklahoma, through some difficult financial times when schools had planned to close their doors. In 1937 Oscar married Maulcie Mae Buchanan. She was also a teacher.
