© The Chickasha Express-Star Chickasha, Oklahoma Thursday, January 25, 2007 Lillie Bell [Westbrook] Blunt April 7, 1907 ~ January 27, 2007 Lillie Bell Blunt departed this life on January 21, 2007. Lillie Bell was born April 7, 1907 in Waco, Texas to Sid Curry and Katie Jones Curry Westbrook. Lillie Bell was the fourth of eleven children. Both parents and all siblings preceded her in death. Lillie Bell, with her family, came to Oklahoma in 1909 where she lived with her family in the Ninnekah and Norge area in Grady County later to Chickasha. She attended Lincoln School in Chickasha where she met and married Clarence Blunt on April 18, 1925. Together, they had seven children, one son died in infancy. Lillie Bell was a 71 year member of the Church of The Living God, Pillar and Ground of the Truth, in Chickasha where she served as the Mother of the Church. She was past chairman of the Deaconess board, past chairman of Mission Circle #1 and chairman of the Pastor's Aid Committee. She served at the request of the Pastor and Deacon board members and was member of the church choir and sang on the radio in 1938. She was assistant director of the youth choir and she also served as volunteer cook for church dinners and special occasions. Lillie Bell was the past Most Noble Governor for the Household of Ruth Number 50/50, a member of the Lincoln School PTA, supporter of the Chickasha Negro Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Flowers Lovers Club. The Flowers Lovers Club, an organization that beautified the community, distributed flower seeds and plants to individuals and planted flowers on vacant lots. They assisted the community with the upkeep of yards and flower gardens, giving awards for the most attractive yards. She also participated in the Grady County Home Demonstration for cooking and canning. Lillie Bell signed the voting register and participated in the 2006 primary election. She was a participant in Governor George Nigh's recognition of citizens born in 1907. As a centenarian, on Jan. 11, 2007 she was one of four who were presented the first Centennial Stamp and a plaque of an enlargement of the stamp by the Chickasha Postal Service. At present, by photograph, she is a participant in the project "Salt of the Red Earth: Oklahoma Centenarians". Her photo will tour the State, culminating in the Governor's Gallery in the Capitol Building. She has been recognized as one of the "Uncrowned Queens: African American Women Community Builders of Oklahoma 1907-2007". She was a life member of the Oklahoma Twin Territory Geneological Society, having traced her grandfather, Jake Jones, born 1878 and great-grandfather, Charlie Jones, born 1834, to the Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory. Lillie Bell was a housewife-homemaker. With 18 grandchildren within one squareblock, she was a baby sitter, nurse, and disciplinarian. She planted a variety of fruit trees in her yard, providing her many grandchildren with years of healthy snacks while playing in the yard, and she maintained a vegetable garden. She made jelly, jam and canned other garden vegetables. She also made biscuits in the morning and deliver them to the homes of her grandchildren to complete their breakfast before they left for school. She would often take the grandchildren on outings and fishing trips and made age-appropriate fishing poles for the smaller children. Cherishing her memory are survivors: four daughters and one son-in-law, Clara and Roy Bryant, Violet Lolar, Lillie Mae Levan, and Loretta Y. Jackson, all of Chickasha; 19 grandchildren, Lillie Bell Blunt Gandy, Darlene Blunt, Edgar Blunt, Jr., Willie Bryant, Leroy Bryant, Rita Levan Williams, Louis Blunt, Glenn Levan, Jan Bryant Hilbum, Michael Lolar, Vanessa Bryant Palmer, Cynthia W. Jackson Anderson, Melvin Blunt, Pamela Bryant Ates, Limon Jackson, Wanez Bryant Fletcher, Felicia Bryant Graham, Chris Bryant, Dean Blunt, Bennie Lee Blunt Dean, Clarence Blunt; 41 great-grandchildren; 31 great-great- grandchildren; one great-great-great-grandchild; special cousins: Natee Alexander, Chickasha, Willie Mae Thompson, Tulsa; as well as a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and many friends. Preceding her in death are: her husband; three sons, Clarence, Jr., Edgar, and Benjamin Blunt; one son-in-law, Harold W.Jackson; two grandchildren, Bennie J. Blunt Bennett, Nawassa Lolar; one great-grandson, Tariq Palmer; four sisters, Beatrice Eddings, Orrilla Smith, Hettie Mae Brown, Grace Tillman; six brothers, Luther Bridgewater, James, Lonnie, Robert, Vernon, Willis Curry. Funeral service will be held Friday, January 26, 2007 at 11:00 AM at the Church of the Living God P. G. of T. in Chickasha, OK with Elder Delbert Allen, Pastor officiating. Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery under the direction of Jefferson Funeral Home. |
