J. Stein, pioneer merchant of Alex and ushered "Uncle Joe", as he was affectionately known to all, to the Land Beyond. Mr. Stein had been in failing health for several months, but had been able to attend to his grocery business here until a few days more than a week preceding the end. He first suffered a light paralytic stroke, was apparently regaining his strength and a second attack became evident, from which he never regained complete consciousness. A. J. Stein was born in San Antonio, Texas, March 17, 1870, and came to this community in 1900, where he engaged in farming. He was married to Miss Dollie Walker on September 20, 1906, by Rev. A. G. White, Methodist minister here at the time. The same year Mr. Stein built a residence in the southeast part of town where the family has since lived. He served as postmaster here from 1914 until 1922, and was engaged in the drug and mercantile business. Until the time of his last illness, two weeks ago, he was actively engaged in the grocery business. He leaves to mourn his loss the widow, three daughters, Mrs. C. J. McCune of Enid, Mrs. R. C. Hale of Alex and Miss Adele Stein of Chickasha, one son, Eugene, at home, two grandchildren here and two sisters in San Antonio. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the West Side Church of Christ, Rev. W. G. Newberry conducting the rites. Burial was in the Morris cemetery, southeast of town. Honorary pallbearers were Pat O'Shea, Mike Philbin, Dr. W. R. Barry, Oscar T. Lents, John Shelby and M. H. Smith, and the active pallbearers were Claude Conner, D. B. Patterson, O. A. Bevill, O. H. Barham, H. T. Conover and John Frick. The Brown Funeral Home at Chickasha, was in charge of the funeral. |
