William Frank Morris
November 28, 1854 ~ January 20, 1922

Old Laflin Home Sold After Allotment

As steps were being made toward statehood, rolls of the five civilized tribes were completed and allotments of land were made to the individuals. Thus, the earlier settlers were obliged to relinquish their holdings. They were, however, permitted to sell their improvements. This was the case with the George Laflin, and later Mrs. James Rigney holdings, a mile east and a mile south of Alex. They had especially well improved the holdings by erecting the commodious ranch house, which still stands. These improvements were sold to Frank Morris. Mr. Morris had been seeking for some time for filing locations for himself and children, and was attracted by the possibilities of this land, both for farming and ranching purposes.

In 1903 he filed claims and received allotments for himself and each of his five children.

Little is known of Mr. Morris' early life. He was born in Butler, Bates county, Missouri, on November 28, 1854. During his youthful years he traveled some what extensively in northern Kansas, New Mexico, and spent some time in old Mexico. He came to Indian Territory in 1895, and at Pauls Valley, in the same year, was married to Miss Salina McClure, a daughter of Tecumseh and Mary McClure, who had been residents of that community since 1865, when they had emigrated from Mississippi with the first group of Chickasaws moving westward.

Tecumseh McClure was a leader in the Chickasaw nation, coming from the House of Mosuchcho Mrs. McClure was from the House of Metapo.

After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Morris resided at Wynnewood and Hennepin, moving to Davis in 1900. Mrs. Morris died in that year and was buried at Hennepin. Four children had preceded her in death, with five surviving.

In 1905 the family moved to the allotments here, and resided in the recently purchased ranch house. Many improvements were inaugurated, porches and shutters were added, making it a very attractive home.

The children attended school at Alex, Susie, when eight, died after a short illness, and was buried in the Morris cemetery which Mr. Morris had set aside as a community burial ground.

In 1909 Mr. Morris sold his allotment, which included the ranch house, to a Dr. Powers, of Iowa, who still owns it.

Two of Mr. Morris' daughters, now Mrs. Holder and Mrs. Chas. J. Wallace, still live on their original allotments. Charles White now lives on Mrs. D. B. Patterson's (who is the third daughter) allotment, while D. B. Horne now owns the Pat Morris (the son) allotment. Mr. and Mrs. Pat Morris now live at Ardmore.

After disposing of his land here, Mr. Morris was for a time engaged in the real estate business in Amarillo, Texas, and in 1917 moved to Longmont, Colorado.

In 1922 he returned to Alex for a visit with his children, and on January 20 he was stricken with a heart attack, and a few minutes later passed away. He was buried in the cemetery that he had set aside many years before, and which bears his name.

Susie Morris
November 1894 ~1902

Susie Morris is shown on the 1900 census in the household of her parents, Frank and Salina Morris. Her birthdate is shown as "Nov. 1894" and as being born in "Indian Territory". There are two granite type rocks which sit beside the tombstone of her father, William Frank Morris. It is believed one of those is her grave.
