Joseph B. "Joe" Moore
March 27, 1847 ~ January 7, 1929

Joseph B. Moore was a member of the Chickasaw Tribe [Card #1392].

His Confederate pension application shows he served during the Civil War under Captain John Harrod, 10th [Witt's] Arkansas Cavalry.

His Indian heritage allowed him to receive an allotment of 160 acres of land in the Chickasaw Nation of Indian Territory. The land he settled was in an area that would later become Alex, Grady Co., OK.

In 1905, before Oklahoma statehood, he requested removal of restrictions upon sale of his allotment, except his homestead. Then, in 1906, Joseph B. Moore, widower, sold 90 acres to W. V. Alexander and kept 70 acres for his homestead. W. V. Alexander later provided some of that same land for a town site to be built which was named "Alex". [Source: Original home deed.]

Mary Jennie Lind [Colbert] Alexander Moore

Jenny Lind Colbert is shown on Ancestry trees [and their sources] to have married two men. These men were William V. Alexander [1833-1920] and Joseph B. Moore [1847-1929].

Jenny and William Vinson Alexander had two children, Mary Frances and Arthur, the first being born about 1869. And, even though we know Jenny didn't die before 1874, William V. Alexander marries Martha E. Davis in 1874.

Jenny is then connected to a new husband, Joseph B. Moore, by 1879 when their first child, James E. Moore, is born. They then have one more child, Nancy (ca 1882).

Jenny dies between the birth of Nancy and 1900. We source this by finding Joseph Moore, listed as a widower, and their two children, Jim and Nancy, on the 1900 census in Rush Springs, C. N., I. T.

James E. Moore died in 1909 and is buried in the Alex Cemetery. Joseph B. Moore died in 1929 and is buried beside James in the Alex Cemetery, Grady Co., OK.

At the head of the row, next to James, is a large rock on which writing can be seen only as "Mo...". It is thought that this is Jenny's grave.

If anyone has any info on Jenny or if the above recounting of her marriages is not felt to be correct, please contact us.
