© Alex Tribune Alex, Oklahoma Friday, January 19, 1934 January 23, 1897 ~ January 12, 1934 World War Veteran Answers "Taps" Alva A. Looney, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Looney, living south of town, died at the Sulphur Veteran's hospital Friday evening after a long battle with pulmonary tuberculosis. Mr. Looney had just entered the hospital for treatment a few hours before the end, but the siege of illness had so weakened his resistance that the outcome was inevitable. Alva Alvarine Looney was born January 23, 1897, at Holder, Oklahoma, the son of John T. and Margaret Minerva Looney. With his family he came to Alex in 1900, receiving his education in the Alex schools. Soon after the entrance of the United States into the World War Alva enlisted, serving for nearly a year, when he received his discharge. Later he engaged in farming, and was employed for several seasons at a local cotton gin. Besides his grief stricken parents, he leaves to mourn his loss a sister, Mrs. Addie Bell Beville, of Wortham, Texas, a brother, Emmett R., of El Reno and a host of friends. The funeral services were held Sunday at the Methodist church Rev. Grady N. Ross officiating, and the local Masonic lodge in charge of the ceremony. Many veterans of the Raymond T. Hurst post of the American Legion were in attendance. The burial was in the Morris cemetery, south of town. |
