© The Chickasha Daily Express Chickasha, Oklahoma Friday, November 7, 1969 William Tarlton Hammons January 2, 1878 ~ November 6, 1969 Funeral services for William T. Hammons, Alex, will be held at 2 pm Sunday in the Alex High School Auditorium with Rev. Asa E. Hendricks, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Alex, officiating. Interment will be in the Alex Cemetery under the direction of Sevier Funeral Home. Hammons, 91, died at 12:30 pm Thursday in Grady Memorial Hospital. He was born January 2, 1878 at Graham, Tex., and had been in failing health for five years. Hammons married Gertrude Eula Byrd March 15, 1919 at Electra, Tex. A resident of the Alex and Hawkins community for the past 28 years, he was formerly of Oklahoma City. A carpenter for most of his life he had farmed since 1941. He was a member of the Methodist Church. Survivors include his widow, Gertrude, of the home on Star Route, Alex; two sons, Earl of Bakersfield, Calif., and Merl of Lawton; one daughter, Mrs. Joyce Joy of Star Route, Alex; eight grandchildren and one great grandson. |
© The Chickasha Daily Express Chickasha, Oklahoma Tuesday, November 12, 1974 Gertrude Eula [Byrd] Hammons September 8, 1900 ~ November 11, 1974 Funeral service for Mrs. Gertrude Eula Hammons, 74, Alex, will be at 3:30 pm Friday in the Alex High School Auditorium. Rev. Victor Garoutte, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, Alex, and Rev. Elmer Steelman, will officiate. Mrs. Hammons was born September 8, 1900, in Corsicana, Texas. She died Monday in Grady Memorial Hospital. She had suffered an apparent heart attack while attending an Eastern Star meeting in Alex. She came to Grady County in 1941. During this time she resided in the Hawkins community, moving to Alex in 1948. She was married on March 15, 1917, to William Hammons. He preceded her in death on Nov. 6, 1969. Mrs. Hammons was a member of the Alex United Methodist Church and a member of the United Methodist Women of the church. She was a teacher in the Intermediate Department of the Sunday School of the church. She was a member of the Winters Creek Extension Homemakers Club. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star chapter at Alex. Survivors include two sons, Merl Hammons of Alex, Earl Hammons of Bakersfield, Calif.; one daughter, Mrs. Joyce Joy, Star Route, Alex; two brothers, Jack Byrd and Silas Byrd of Electra, Texas; eight grandchildren and four grandchildren. Interment will be in Alex Cemetery under direction of Sevier Funeral Home. |
