Godwin Succumbs To Sudden Heart Attack Cornelius Godwin, a resident of this community since 1917, succumbed to a sudden heart attack at his home here late Saturday afternoon. He had been in failing health for several years due to a heart ailment but had been able to be about and to carry on his daily affairs. Saturday he returned home after a two days visit with relatives at McLoud, and almost immediately after entering his home was stricken and fell. His doctor was called, but Mr. Godwin passed on before his arrival. Cornelius Godwin, son of David Godwin, was born at Matoon, Ill., on March 16, 1870. gie Grant in 1892 and a few years later moved to Purcell where he engaged in farming. Afterward the family moved to Lindsay and then, in 1917, to Alex, where they since have resided, with the exception of two years which was spent in Sulphur. Mrs. Godwin passed on July 6, 1938, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident a few days before. In later life Mr. Godwin became affiliated with the Church of Christ where he worshiped until the end. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the West Side Church of Christ, Rev. W. G. Newberry conducting he last sad rites. He was laid to rest in the Morris cemetery. Of the immediate family, three sons survive, Nealy, Emmett and John, all residing south of town. Four daughters died in infancy. Pallbearers were Jack Neill, Clyde Phillips, Gladace Goyne, Charles White, Clyde Wallace and Floyd Timberlake. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. W. R. Barry, M. H. Smith, W. M. Timberlake, Lee Cruse, Horace Phillips and George King. |
© Alex Tribune Alex, Oklahoma Friday, July 15, 1938 Margaret "Maggie" [Grant] Godwin December 11, 1874 ~ July 6, 1938 Grim Reaper" Claims Splendid Citizen Mrs. Cornelius Godwin, citizen of this community for the past twenty one years, was claimed by death at 10 p.m., July 6, 1938, at a Chickasha hospital following an automobile accident a few days previously, as she with her husband was starting on trip to Iowa to visit relatives. The passing of this kind charitable, lovable lady is mourned by everyone who knew her. She was ever ready to lend her assistance to one in need, regardless of class or creed. She was a real companion to her husband, a wonderful mother to her sons, and a contented home maker. The constant path of friends and neighbors to her door gave fine evidence of the love and respect people bore for her and denoted her standing in the hearts of her home town people. Maggie Grant Godwin was born December 11, 1874 at Mattonn, Illinois, one of the eleven children of Mr. and Mrs. Elias Rye Grant. She was married to Cornelius Godwin at Clinton, Illinois, on May 2, 1893. To this union was born seven children, four daughters passing on in infancy. The family moved to Lexington, Oklahoma, in 1900 and two years later moved to the Lindsay community, leaving there in 1917 for Alex, where they have since resided, with the exception of two years residence in Sulphur. Mrs. Godwin became a Christian and united with the Methodist church early in life, and practiced her creed each day of a long and useful life. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the Methodist church, Rev. Earl Nowlin conducting the rites. Burial was in Morris cemetery southeast of town. She leaves to always mourn her loss the husband, three sons, Nealy, John and Emmett, and nine grandchildren. The honorary pallbearers, all long time friends of the family, were W. G. Newberry, M. H. Smith, R. L. Cruse, R. L. Foster, W. M. Timberlake and D. P. Chitwood, and active pallbearers were Jack Neill, Clyde Phillips, W. G. Barry, Gladace Goyne, Floyd Timberlake, Clyde Wallace, Ed Fielde and Charles O'Donnell. The flower girls were Bessie Lee Goyne, Hazel Phillips, Mildred and Sarepta Kendricks, Opal Wilson and Christine Nelson. Relatives from other places attending the funeral were Dave and Jesse Godwin and Mr. and Mrs. Guy Gable of Pampa, Tex., Barney Godwin of Purcell, Elzie Godwin of McLoud, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Anderson of Wichita Falls and Mr. and Mrs. L. Penn of Pauls Valley. |
© Chickasha Express~Star Chickasha, Oklahoma May 9, 2001 Mary Virginia [Gibbs] Godwin-Simmons March 3, 1905 ~ May 7, 2001 Funeral service for Mary Virginia Godwin Simmons, 96, of Alex, Oklahoma, will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 10, 2001, in the Chapel of Sevier Funeral Home. Graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. at the Alex Cemetery, Alex, Oklahoma. Mary Virginia Godwin Simmons was born April 3, 1905, in Rush Springs, Oklahoma, I.T., the daughter of James "Bud" and Viola [Solkle], and died Monday, May 7, 2001, in Chickasha, Oklahoma. She and John Godwin were married June of 1923 and were parents of six children. He preceded her in death in 1959. She married Roy Simmons in August of 1965, and he preceded her in death in 1992. Mrs. Simmons was a member of the Alex Methodist Church. She was also preceded in death by: her parents, 1 grandchild: Robin Looney, 2 daughters: Mildred Looney and Margaret Knox, 2 sons: Leonard "Drew" Godwin and Neal Godwin, 6 brothers and 4 sisters. Survivors include: 2 daughters: Helen Huffer of Crescent, Oklahoma, Johnne Wolfe of Perkins, Oklahoma; 4 stepsons and 2 stepdaughters; 14 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, 5 great great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. Interment will be in the Alex Cemetery under the direction of Sevier Funeral Home. |
