© Alex Tribune Alex, Oklahoma Friday, September 1, 1933 Joseph Emmitt "J. E." Cruse October 20, 1888 ~ August 28, 1933 Alex Man Answers Grim Reaper's Call Residents of the town and surrounding countryside were inexpressibly saddened Monday evening to learn of the death of J. E. Cruse, prominent resident and business man of Alex. Mr. Cruse died, according to his physician, from carbolic acid poisoning. Friends said that he had been in poor health for a number of months, and this was undoubtedly the reason for his sudden and unexpected decision. Mr. Cruse had been around town Monday and was apparently in his customary fine spirits, meeting and talking to friends and acquaintances in his usual cheerful manner. About six o'clock Mr. Cruse returned to his home and a few minutes later, Mrs. Cruse found him in a comatose condition. She immediately summoned medical assistance, but in a little while Mr. Cruse breathed his last. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at the Methodist Church with interment in the Morris cemetery, south of town. He leaves a wife, a daughter, Mrs. Herman Cates, of Lindsay, a son, J. E., Jr., four sisters, Mrs. A. J. Jernijohn of Omaha, Nebr., Mrs. A. L. Ramsey, Alex, Mrs. Walter Coil, of Salem, Ark. and Miss Lola Cruse, six brothers, John, Vesa and Ples Cruse, all of Paragould, Arkansas, Dave Cruse of Norman, Vernon Cruse, of St. Louis, and Deck Cruse of Omaha, Nebraska. An article found in the book titled "Alex....a Brief History of the School Class Members and Graduates, the People of Alex: Past and Present" compiled by Christine Peters, July 2000 shows a photo of the "J. E. Cruse & Co." store in Alex, OK with a caption which says "December 22, 1927.....Alex biggest store closed out business Tuesday. The big mercantile establishment of J. E. Cruse and Co. closed out the last of their immense stock of merchandise Tuesday evening and vacated the building." [At one time, J. E. Cruse operated the largest store in Alex which occupied three store buildings.] |
