Airington Family Cemetery History:

The old abandoned cemetery has long been known to locals as the Airington Family Cemetery because it originated the land owned by James "Jim" Drew Airington. Jim Airington received his 160 acre allottment because of his Choctaw Indian heritage. He then eventually bought the adjoining 160 acres to his allottment giving him 320 acres. The Airington Family Cemetery is located on the 2nd tract of land that Jim owned. The last known owners of the land holding the old cemetery were the family of Beulah Mae Wright, a niece of Jim Airington, which is why you will sometimes be told the Airington Family Cemetery is located on Wright land. Many parcels of the original 320 acres of land have been sold so it is not known if the Wright family continues to own the parcel holding the old cemetery at present. The cemetery was vandalized years ago and many of the stones were destroyed at that time. Local stories tell of at least 40 graves there but at present, only a few stones have been found still standing.

Cemetery notes and description:

This cemetery has been deserted for years and is documented by the local Historical Society as being the Ireton Community Cemetery. However, further research shows that this is actually the Airington Family Cemetery. At the time of these burials, the Airington Family owned this land and buried several people here. Some accounts indicate about 40 graves are here but there are only tombstones clearly giving information for four people. There are several red rocks in the area as well which seem to indicate markers for graves but impossible at this point to say exactly where and who they are for. There has been vandalism in this cemetery of grave digging and the evidence is still visible.

Most of the cemetery grounds where there are supposed to be about 40
graves looks like this with only one tombstone in this area. That tombstone
is in the middle of this photo and lists two children of the Andrews family.

Airington Family Cemetery directions:

Directions from Alex, Grady Co., OK: From the intersection of the Alex Highway (N2940 Rd) go north out of Alex to Hawkins Baptist Church, turn east on Hawkins Rd (E1410 Rd), continue east to 4-way stop at Junction of N2970 County Line Rd and Hawkins Rd. There will be a "Dead End" sign directly in front of you. Continue 3 ½ miles east on "dead end" road (E1410 Rd) and you will end up at the farm of Calvin England [2901 County Line 2970]. It is about ½ mile southeast of that location and off road. Calvin, who now owns the old Beulah Wright homeplace, will provide directions from his home through his pasture to the fence which separates his pasture from the old cemetery. Calvin must be contacted before entering the cemetery.

See the "Cemetery location maps"below. The cemetery is indicated by the white dot in the lower right hand corner. The East/West road is Hawkins Rd and is about half way down the map.
