July 2018 Irene Jane Barker Newby December 15, 1917 ~ July 8, 2018 Irene Jane Barker was born December 15, 1917 in Purdy Oklahoma; one of two children born to the farm family of James Alexander and Hattie Josephine [Davis] Barker. She attended school in Lindsay, Oklahoma graduating in 1938. Her family came to Oklahoma from Magazine, Arkansas and established a farm, a machine shop and a grocery store. She recalled using a persimmon tree for a Christmas tree because they had no ornaments, just nuts. Her favorite childhood memory was winning a poetry contest in Lindsay and a spelling bee in Garvin County. She also had fond memories of working in the fields and with livestock with her dad. She also recalled possum hunting at night with dad when her job was to carry the lantern. She recalled pleasant times gardening and canning with her mother. She married Edgar Newby in Lindsay on February 25, 1939. They had 68 years together and were blessed with three children, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Irene was a farm wife and worked in a broomcorn factory until her retirement in 1980. She was recognized as the fastest broomcorn cutter on the floor.
