[Bennett] Yoakum, and the grandaughter of Frances Delilah "Fannie Moore and Martin M.A. Yoakum. Based on her father's maternal Native American heritage she was enrolled, #27574, in the Chickasaw Nation, IT, and appears on Dawes card number 372. January 11, 1990 Dennis Augustus Yoakum June 8, 1901 ~ January 11, 1990 Dennis was born to Martin Miller Augustus Yoakum and Laura Alice [Miller] Burleson, in Indian Territory. His 4 siblings were: Bertie Pearl, Martin, Lovie Ann, and Minyon Jewel; 5 half-Yoakum siblings, 6 half-Burleson siblings, and all 16 born before Oklahoma Territory statehood, in 1907. He married Eva Velma Jaye, daughter of John Marion and Mattie [Dobyns] Jaye, in Rosedale, McClain Co., OK, 05 Oct 1918, and to this union were born 6 children. In 1940, the family moved to OKC where he worked for Wilson Meat Packing Co. Upon retirement, in 1966, he and Velma moved to a small farm in Wayne, McClain Co. He was predeceased by his wife, Velma, in 1986; infant twins, a son, Bland Dale and a daughter, Frankie Vandale; his sister, Bertie Pearl Weaver Haymes; his brother, Martin, and 1 infant grandchild, Ellen. Survivors include his children: Harold, Geneva, Dennisteen, and D.J; and his sisters, Lovie Barton and Minnie Roberson. Services were held at the Wayne First Baptist Church with his grandson, Rev. June 2000 Fannie Margaret Yoakum July 10, 1912 ~ June 21, 2000 Fannie Margaret Yoakum, 87, passed from this life on Wednesday, June 21, 2000 in Albuquerque, New Mexicoafter a lengthy battle with cancer. She was born July 10, 1912 in Paoli, Oklahoma to John t. and Lillie Wisley Yoakum. In 1924 she and her parents moved to Purcell. She was a member pf the Purcellgraduating class of 1930. In 1934 she began working for CWA. Fannie moved with each agency until retiring from the Department of Human Services after 43 years of continous employment. Fannie was instrumental in assisting with the circulation of the petition that brought about the passage of the Social Security Act. After Fanniel retired, she was called back to work during three different years on an emergency basis. In 1987 she returned on a voluntary basis and continued this for 6 1/2 years. Obviously she was a dedicated, trusted and calued employee. Fannie was a 50 year member of the Purcell Eastern Star. She also was an active and supportive member of the First Baptist Church of Purcell. In her later years Fannie moved to Albuquerque, N. M. to be near her family. A graveside service will be held Saturday, June 24, 2000 at 2:00 P.M. with Reverend Wayne Brown officiating at the Paoli, Oklahoma Cemetery under the direction of Yoakum-Damet Funeral Home, Purcell, Oklahoma. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. |
October 12, 2007 Lottie A. [Story] Yoakum April 21, 1913 ~ October 12, 2007 Funeral services for Lottie A. Yoakum, 94, were held Oct. 15, 2007 in the Wooster Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Terry Erwin officiating. The daughter of William Porter Story and Susanna Ertice "Sudie" Voss Story, Lottie moved to Oklahoma with her parents and siblings in 1927. On Aug. 31, 1932 she married Floyd L. Yoakum. Mrs. Yoakum worked for many years as a cook at Rosedale Schools and later at Pauls Valley Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd; one son, Donald Lee Yoakum; 4 brothers and 2 sisters. Survivors include twin daughters, Sandra Dunkin and her husband, Jerry, Enid and Sharon Couch and her husband, Carl, Pauls Valley; 3 sisters, Gladys Wyatt, Purcell, Joyce Birdwell, Pauls Valley and Vernal Stinnett, Shawnee; 1 brother, Lonas Story, Pauls Valley; sister-in-law, Dorothy Yoakum Byrd, Rosedale; 7grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. © Wilson-Little Funeral Home Purcell, Oklahoma June 2019 Dennis Jearl Yoakum Sr 20 Oct 1922 ~ June 4, 2019 Dennis Jearl Yoakum, Sr, Oklahoma educator, passed away on Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at Norman Veterans Center, Norman, OK. On 20 Oct 1922, he was third of six children born to pre-statehood natives, Dennis A. and Velma [Jaye] Yoakum, three miles south of Rosedale, OK. Proud of his heritage, he was grandson of Martin and Laura [Miller] Yoakum and John M. and Mattie [Dobyns] Jaye. A 1940 graduate of Rosedale High School, he left Oklahoma to work in the grape vineyards and walnut groves on the Fuller Ranch in California. By Christmas of 1940 he had returned to Rosedale and to his high school sweetheart, Hazel. He enrolled at OAMC, now OSU, in 1941, and began working that summer for Wilson and Company in OKC. He wed the love of his life, Hazel Cathryn Whitfield, on 14 March 1942 in Purcell, OK. On 16 December 1942 he entered the Army Air Force serving three years as a radio repairmen and airborne radar technician, in the 1073rd Signal Corps, during WWII. He was honorably discharged on 17 November 1945 and enlisted as a Sgt. serving in the Active Reserves for four years. In 1949, courtesy of the GI Bill, he was able to earn a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Education from Central State College, now UCO, Edmond, OK, in 1952. That fall he began teaching junior and senior high math and coaching in Loyal Public School, Kingfisher Co., OK. After completing his Masters Degree in Education in 1954 he received his Administrative Degree in 1955 from Phillips University, Enid, OK. That same year he accepted a position in Purcell as Mary Simpson Elementary School Principal and 6th grade teacher. Retiring as the Purcell Middle School Principal, after 36 years as an educator, he became McClain Co. Superintendent of Schools until 1985. Upon retirement he devoted his time to raising cattle and hay while maintaining and improving the Yoakum home place, on Indian Allotment land farmed by his father and grandfather, Martin Miller Yoakum. Preceding him in death were: his parents; his infant daughter, Ellen Jearldene, born on 25 April 1943 and died on 26 April 1943; five siblings, Harold Yoakum, Geneva Wahoma Blackwell, Dennisteen VanWagner Murray, infant twin siblings, a girl, Frankie Vandale and a boy, Bland Dale; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Hugh and Beulah Whitfield, longtime Rosedale residents, and his niece, Gayle Yoakum Dyer. Survivors include: his devoted, beloved wife of 77 years, Hazel; three children, Jane Evans and her husband, Doug, of Edmond, OK, Donna Giauque and her husband, Scott, of Plano, TX, and Denny Yoakum and his wife Donna of Commerce, TX. Also surviving are: six grandchildren, Eden Moore, Cameron Menghini, Kyle Giauque, Geoffrey Giauque, Catherine Pineda and Caitlin Yoakum; Eleven great-grandchildren: Whitney, Maddie and Ainsley Moore; Frankie, Henry and Samantha Menghini; Mary Kate, Travis and Harley Giauque; Jack Roman and Hazel Jo Pineda; brothers-in-law, H.T. (Dessie Lee) and Max Whitfield; one niece and four nephews. He had been a member and Sunday school teacher of the Purcell First Baptist Church since 1955 and supported various educational, civic and military organizations. Services will be 10:00 A.M., Friday, June 7, 2019 .at Wilson-Little Funeral Home Chapel, Purcell, OK. Burial will follow at Paoli Cemetery, Paoli, OK. © Wilson-Little Funeral Home Purcell, Oklahoma May 2023 September 17, 1923 ~ May 17, 2023 Hazel Cathryn Yoakum, age 99, of Purcell, entered Heaven's Gates to reunite with loved ones on May 17, 2023, in Lexington, Oklahoma. As one of six children of Hugh and Beulah [Lancaster] Whitfield, she was born on September 17, 1923 in Mountain View, Stone County, Arkansas. The town was named by her great-great grandfather, Elijah Chappell. In 1927, the family moved to the Hopping area of Wayne, Oklahoma; before they eventually resided on the Whitfield family farm, one mile west of Rosedale on Highway 59. She was a 1941 Rosedale High School graduate. She lettered in softball as a catcher and in basketball as a forward; and she was a member of the National Honor Society. On March 14, 1942, she married her high school sweetheart, Dennis Jearl "D.J." Yoakum After D.J. returned from serving in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII in Europe and North Africa, they resided in Oklahoma City and Loyal, before ultimately settling in Purcell. As a member of Purcell Baptist Church since 1955, she volunteered and cared for children in Sunday School Nursery and Vacation Bible School and Girls Auxiliary. In the mid-1960's, she became the Mary Simpson Elementary School secretary and later on at the Purcell Middle School. Before retirement she served as a McClain County Board Secretary under Commissioner Bill Wyatt. Hazel was humble and admired for her quiet and constant nurturing and caring ways; not only for her family, but especially for the very young and very old. She had the special gift of a quick wit and a playful and encouraging smile, wink, or nod. She enjoyed and was talented in quilting, crocheting, sewing, baking, and gardening. Preceding her to Heaven was her husband of 77 years, D.J. Yoakum in 2019; and an infant daughter, Ellen Jearldene in 1943. Also preceding her in death were: her parents; her brothers, Nelce, Richard, H.T., Max; and her sister, Lucille Klepper. Surviving loved ones are three children: daughter, Jane and husband, Doug Evans; daughter, Donna and husband, Scott Giauque; and son, Denny and his wife Donna. Surviving are six grandchildren: Eden Moore, Cameron Menghini, Kyle Giauque, Geoff Giauque, Catherine Pineda, and Caitlin Yoakum. Survivors are thirteen great-grandchildren: Whitney, Maddie and Ainsley; Frankie, Henry and Samantha; Harley and Brooks; Mary Kate and Travis; Jack Roman, Hazel Jo, and Nora Rose. The family will receive friends at Wilson-Little Funeral Home between 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m, prior to the Graveside Service, which will be held at Paoli Cemetery on May 22, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. Her nephew, Rev.
