September 28, 2010 Douglas D. "Doug" Ward September 17, 1943 ~ September 26, 2010 Douglas D. Ward passed away on September 26, 2010 at age 67 after a courageous battle with cancer. The second in a family of four boys born to Helen Ruth Towery Ward & Warren D. Ward, Doug was born on September 17, 1943 in Detroit, Michigan. After graduating from High School, he served two years in the Army in Vietnam. Doug graduated from Oklahoma Christian College with a B.S. degree in education and later obtained his master's degree at Central State University. Doug spent his career teaching elementary school in the Mid-Del School District. He was a member of the New Hope Church of Christ. He coached basketball for many years of his career, and he continued coaching basketball to children in his retired years. He loved all aspects of the outdoors, such as sailing, hiking, snow skiing, and camping. He also loved playing the banjo in the old-time style, and was an avid collector of folk music recordings and banjos. Doug loved life, but looked forward to being at home with the Lord. He is survived by his wife, Jana Boren Ward; three children: Tara Ward, Alyssa Hand, and Jason Hand; three brothers: Tracy Ward, Ron Ward, and Kevin Ward; his mother, Ruth Ward; and many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his father, Warren Ward. The viewing will be at Demuth Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 28, 2010, from 9:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. Funeral service will be held at Emmanuel Southern Baptist Church at 700 W. 2nd St., Edmond, OK, at 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday, September 29, 2010. He will be buried at the Paoli Cemetery in Paoli, Oklahoma. Instead of flowers, the family has requested memorial donations be sent to Hospice of Oklahoma County. |
