© Havenbrook Funeral Home Norman, Oklahoma Saturday, February 26, 2011 Ivy Odell "Digger" Steward April 18, 1925 ~ February 26, 2011 Ivy Odell "Digger" Steward, of Norman, died at his home Saturday, February 26, 2011, at the age of 85, following a long illness. He was born April 18, 1925 near the rural community of Cox City, Oklahoma, to parents, Carrie and Ivy L. "Buddy" Steward. After graduating from Paoli High School, Mr. Steward joined the Army Air Force, serving his country as flight engineer. Following his honorable discharge, he attended the University of Oklahoma. On March 15, 1947, Mr. Steward married Marie Burnett in Topeka, KS. They moved to Norman in 1952 with Marie's two children and together had two sons, Bob and Rod. He maintained a career in the oil industry for 30 years and retired from Brown Oil Tools. Mr. Steward started his own tool rental company while continuing as a oil field consultant. This enabled him to pursue his true passion of ranching, raising horses and cattle. On August 14, 2000, he married Christine Dodd in Norman. They both liked to go places, and they frequently traveled with Vicki Riggs and the senior traveling crew of First Baptist Church. Mr. Steward was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Norman. He was a 65-year member of the Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons, a lifetime member of the Norman Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member India Shriners Oklahoma City. Odell was a life member of the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) and the Oklahoma Cattleman's Association. He was also a charter member of the Paoli Oklahoma Historical Society. Mr. Steward was an avid fan of University of Oklahoma sports and held football season tickets for 57 consecutive years. Mr. Steward was from the generation that believed in hard work, a man's word is his bond, and he loved his country and the American flag. He was a wonderful mentor, husband and father. Mr. Steward is preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Marie; and three sisters, Barbara June, Marcheta, and Mildred; and two stepchildren, Laquita and Nathan. He is survived by his wife, Christine; sister, Marie Crouch of Paoli; two sons, Bob of Norman, and Rod of Houston, Texas; and numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank Dr. Paul Plusquellec for his extraordinary care; Heartland Hospice; and his caregivers, Sherry, Julia, Clarine, Azalea and Martha, for their loving support and friendship. Services will be held at 1:30pm, Tuesday, March 1, 2011, in the First Baptist Church of Norman, Rev. Wade Smith officiating, with interment following in the Paoli Cemetery, under the direction of Havenbrook Funeral Home, Norman. Honorary pallbearers are John Cole, Bill Duncan, Dale White, Vickie Felton, members of the senior adult Sunday school department at First Baptist Church and also members of the his monthly Veterans breakfast. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the First Baptist Church, 211 W. Comanche, Norman, OK 73069, in support of the Family Life Center renovation. |
