Harold W. Sherrod
December 11, 1922 ~ February 27, 2006

Harold W. Sherrod, age 83, of Paoli, Oklahoma, passed away Monday, February 27, 2006 at his home in Paoli.

Harold was born on December 11, 1922 at Paoli. He was the youngest of eight children born to Willard Rufus and Mary Ella Sherrod.

Harold attended 12 years of school at Paoli, graduating from high school in 1940. He went to work for Western Electric Company in 1941.

In June of 1942 he married his high school sweetheart, Pauline Burns.

In World War II Harold served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from February to December 1943.

In 1944 he enrolled in the Engineering School at Oklahoma University and earned a BS degree in Geological Engineering in 1949.

From 1949 to 1978 Harold worked as an Exploration Geologist for Amoco Oil Company [Standard Oil of Indiana] in Midland, Texas; Roswell, New Mexico; Oklahoma City; Ft. Worth, Texas; and Houston, Texas.

He retired from Amoco in 1978. He and Pauline moved back home to Paoli. Pauline died of cancer in their 47th year of marriage.

She and Harold had four children. They survive with their spouses: David H. Sherrod and his wife, Jeanne, of Palestine, Texas; Sandi G. [Sherrod] Carter and her husband, Roland, of Ft. Worth, Texas; Ray K. Sherrod and his wife, Mary, of Tomball, Texas; and Janie E. [Sherrod] McQuigg and her husband, Clark of Miami, Oklahoma.

In 1989 Harold married Lenore Stalcup. They have made Paoli their home since.

He is survived by his wife, Lenore, of Paoli; and as well as her children and their families: Larry Stalcup and his wife, Debby, of Amarillo, Texas, Janet Dulin and her husband, Bob, of Norman, Oklahoma, and Debbie Scott and her husband, Randy, of Norman, Oklahoma.

He is also survived by 16 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

After moving to Paoli in 1978 Harold had been active by helping with various community projects and committees aimed at making Paoli a better place to live.

He was a school board member, a member of the Masonic Lodge, President of the Paoli Alumni Association, President of the Paoli Sr. Citizens and a member of the Paoli Historical Society.

In addition he was a member of the First Baptist Church where he has served as a deacon, trustee and church treasurer for many years. Also, he was on the Building Committee in 1981 and 1982 when the present First Baptist Church was built.

Harold liked most all sports, especially baseball and football. His main hobby was fishing although he took great pleasure in teasing people. He said he never teased anyone he didn't like. Judging by his actions he must have liked nearly everyone.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 2, 2006 at 11 a.m. at Paoli First Baptist Church officiated by Rev. Terry Erwin and assisted by Rev. Leroy Looper and Fred Butler.

Burial will be at Paoli Cemetery under the direction of Stufflebean-Coffey Funeral Home.
