Carl Elwin Byrd
May 19, 1907 ~ September 29, 1989


Mr. Byrd, of Chickasaw heritage and a former resident of Ada, Rosedale, OK and Kennewick, WA, died at Colonial Nursing Home, Pauls Valley, Garvin Co., OK.

He was the husband of Rosedale resident, Dorothy [Yoakum] Byrd, also of Chickasaw heritage and daughter of the late Leonard and Love [Green] Yoakum, longtime OK pioneers.

Born in the Chickasaw Nation, IT, he was an enrolled member of the Chickasaws, #5463.

His parents were Benjamin Franklin Byrd* and Mary Elizabeth "Mamie" [Goldsby] Byrd. (Ben: 17 Jan 1849, Doaksville, Towson Co. Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory , d. 23 Nov 1915 and Mamie: b. 1866, Chickasaw Nation, IT d. 1909, Ada, OK. They were wed on 9 Mar 1890.

Dorothy [Yoakum] Byrd
January 4, 1917 ~ February 24, 2014


Funeral services for Mrs. Byrd, age 97, of Rosedale, were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, February 27, 2014 at Wooster Funeral Home Chapel in Pauls Valley, OK, with Rev. Mike Ridgway officiating.

Mrs. Byrd died at Westbrook Gardens Assisted Living.

The youngest of three children born to Leonard Lee and Lovie [Jackson] Yoakum, she was raised in Rosedale, graduating from Rosedale High School's Class of 1934.

A 1939 graduate of East Central University, Ada, she received her Bachelor of Science degree. A bookkeeper for her husband Carl E. Byrd at their car dealership in Kennewick, WA, they resided there for 32 years before returning to OK in 1975.

A longtime member of the Baptist Church, she was also active in the Garden Club, Beaux Arts and helped to establish the Girl Scouts in Kennewick in 1953, and served as a troop leader.

After returning to OK she worked in the Pauls Valley school system at Hill Top School for 7 years, retiring in 1982.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband Carl Elwin Byrd in 1989, a brother Floyd Lee, a sister Elva D. Williamson and 3 nephews Donald Lee Yoakum, Joel D. and James A. Williamson.

Survivors include nephews and nieces, whom she called her children. They are Gary Williamson and Marilyn Whygle of OR, Sharon Couch of Pauls Valley, OK, and Sandra Dunkin of Enid, OK.

Pallbearers were Gary and Nick Williamson, Carl Couch, Jerry Dunkin, Billy Cowan and Jack Jones.

Honorary pallbearers were relatives and friends. Memorials may be made to Rosedale First Baptist Church or to the charity of the giver's choice.
