August 2017 Delmer Dean "Del" Porter June 21, 1919 ~ August 1, 2017 Delmer Dean "Del" Porter was born June 21, 1919 in Newark, Arkansas to William Lee and Essie Addie Sisk Porter. He departed this life for his heavenly home on August 1, 2017. At an early age he accepted Jesus as his Savior and was active in Baptist Churches throughout his life. He lived in Newark, Arkansas and a few other small towns in Arkansas until he graduated from high school. In 1941 he began his service in the US Army. He married the love of his life Hazel Sherman on July 30, 1944 in an Army Chapel in Neosho, Missouri. In December 1944 he was transferred to the Philippines. He was discharged from the Army January 6, 1946 and started classes at Oklahoma City University January 20, 1946 graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Math in August 1948. While at OCU he worked nights for Fentress Sound Equipment Company. His first job as a teacher was at a small rural school in Herd, Oklahoma. He attended collage in the summers and received his Master's Degree in August 1952. He had several teaching jobs then became a salesman/consultant for Kellogg Switch Broad and Supply Company in Independence Missouri. Later he worked for Motorola in Chicago as an Engineer designing Microwave Systems. In 1961 he started selling Closed Circuit Television systems for Motorola while living in Memphis. Then he transferred to Oklahoma City and also sold Hospital Nurse Call Systems. A friend needed a High School Principal and math teacher in Barnsdall, Oklahoma, Del took the job and the family lived there for two years. Hazel decided to go back to college and finish her degree in 1965, so the family moved to Norman, Oklahoma so Hazel could attend Oklahoma University. Del taught physical science at Central Junior High and was the Supervisor of the Adult Basic Education program in the evenings. An acquaintance recommended Del for the position of Educational Director at the prison facility in Lexington, Oklahoma. He worked there for five years until Hazel accepted the Acquisition Librarian position at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa. Del and Hazel moved to Mannford, Oklahoma and lived there 34 years. Del taught Math in Mannford Public Schools until 1982 when he started Del's Tax Service and prepared income tax returns in his home until 2009. Del finally stopped working when he was 90 years old and left Mannford to move closer to his three daughters. Del is survived by his wife Hazel and his three daughters Jean Tahkofper, Kay Marshall and husband Kent, Lisa O'Malley and husband Frank. Six grandchildren Sheila Miranda and husband Danny, Sherry White, Sean Marshall and wife Dena, Monica Minkel and husband Daniel, Shawna Briggs and husband Dre and Katie Powless and husband Troy, seventeen great-grandchildren, He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Lawrence Black and Fred L. Porter, and sisters Willie Wesner and June Harrison. A visitation will be 12-8pm Wednesday August 9, 2017 @ Havenbrook Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be 1:00pm Thursday August 10, 2017 at Havenbrook Funeral Home, 3401 Havenbrook Street, Norman, with interment to follow at Oaklawn Cemetery in Wynnewood, OK.
