© Havenbrook Funeral Home Norman, Oklahoma September 2017 James Henry "Rick" Layton April 08, 1946 - September 09, 2017 James Henry "Rick" Layton, 71, of Norman, Oklahoma joined his Father in Heaven Saturday, September 9th 2017. He was born April 8th, 1946 in Mebane, North Carolina to James Graham and Molly Francis, later to be adopted by his step-father Roy O W Layton. He grew up in Sacramento, CA. where he graduated from Hiram Johnson High in 1964. In 1966 he joined the Army, trained as a helicopter crew chief, and served his country in Vietnam. Rick had several close brushes with death while stationed in Vietnam. He received 14 air medals, 2 with v-devices for valor and received 2 Army commendation medals. After an honorable discharge he returned to civilian life in Sacramento, California. He was a true outdoorsman as he loved hiking, fishing, and backpacking. He loved traveling and had many land and ocean adventures; to include deep sea fishing and sailing together with his wife, Becky, to the Christmas islands, from Hawaii, in their small 38' ocean worthy sailboat. He was a successful independent contractor and craftsman where he built custom homes. He loved serving others and would go out of his way to offer his services "free of charge" to nearly anyone that needed or asked. He is preceded in death by James Graham and Earl Layton. Rick is survived by his parents Molly and Roy Layton, his sister Deborah Layton, and his wife Rebecca Layton, his children, James "Jim" Layton, Brian Layton, and Rebecca Mieure. The family will be present to receive friends from 11am- 1pm on Thursday, September 14th at the LDS chapel located at 1506 W. Imhoff Rd in Norman, OK. Funeral services will begin at 1pm at the same location. Interment will be at 3pm at Oaklawn cemetery located at East South Street and South East Ave in Wynnewood, OK. |
