Leroy Peters, Sr., the second born of Mary and Brown Peters, was born September 20, 1919 in Elmore City, Oklahoma, 14 miles southwest of Pauls Valley. First School attended was Pilgrim Rest, Big Woods, completed the eighth grade at Oak Grove east of Wynnewood. He entered the United States Army in January, 1942, trained at Ft. Knox, Kentucky; Camp Claiborne, Louisiana and Camp Hood, Texas. Serving in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany, was Honorably Discharged in November, 1945, and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, ETO Ribbon with four Battle Stars, and a Victory Ribbon. Leroy was baptized at the age of 11 years old, Ordained a Deacon for Bethlehem Baptist Church in 1955 serving eight years under the leadership of Pastor C. R. Hill and C W Whitlow. Leroy was called into the ministry in 1962. He gave his first sermon "God Is Able To Deliver" Ezekiel 37:3-4 verses at Bethlehem Baptist Church. He was called to Pastor at the Zion Baptist Church December 11, 1965 on the second and fourth Sundays serving there for six years. On March 29, 1966, he was called to Salem Baptist Church first and third Sundays and he pastored at Salem for 30 years. Leroy returned to Mt. Zion Baptist Church as a fulltime Pastor. Leroy worked for 30 years at the Trinity Baptist Church. He also worked at OG&E, Chamber of Commerce, Moody Hotel, Federal and Loan and the Masonic Temple. Leroy united in Holy matrimony with Ozella Smith Peters for 39 years. To this union, six children were born. In 1981 he united with Alice Williams Peters who preceded him in death. Leroy departed this life at 10:44 pm on April 29, 2010. He leaves to cherish his memories two sisters: Marilyn Buckner and Vernetta Faye Peters of Pauls Valley; seven children, Helen Blakely and her husband, Willie, of Tulsa; Leroy Peters, Jr. of Pauls Valley; Linda Walker of Edmond; Clara Fleming and her husband, Mike, of Jones; Gerald Peters and his wife, Regina, of Dallas, Texas; Loretta Clark and her husband, Alex, of Oklahoma City; and Carol Hill and her husband Jackie, of Midwest City; Eighteen grandchildren; thirty-one great grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 7, 2010 at 11:00 am at Trinity Baptist Church officiated by Rev. Ronell Peters along with Rev. Bruce Ford and Rev. E. J. Tyson. Interment will be at Bethlehem Cemetery. Interment and professional services are under the direction of Stufflebean-Coffey Funeral Home. |
