© Winans Funeral Home Maysville Oklahoma Friday, February 21, 2014 June 12, 1928 ~ February 21, 2014 Marvin Bishop "Dawg" Lawson, Jr. of Purcell was born on June 12, 1928 in Stafford, Oklahoma to Marvin Bishop Lawson, Sr. and Margie Pearl [Gassaway] Lawson. He passed away on Friday, February 21, 2014 in Purcell, Oklahoma at the age of 85 years. Marvin married Omeda Kay on March 23, 1957 at her home near Elmore City. On July 20, 1960 a son was born, Phillip K. Lawson. From third grade through high school, Marvin attended school in Norman. In the fall of 1946 Marvin was scheduled to be key guard for Norman's Tigers football grind where he was a letterman in the 1945 season, but instead he headed for a tour of duty with the U. S. Army. After the tour of duty with the Army, Marvin was eligible for another season of football and then he graduated from Norman High School the fall term of 1948. While in the Army from September 27, 1946 to February 9, 1948, he served with the 3rd Engineer Combat Battalion in Kokura, Japan where he drove a vehicle transporting Japanese laborers, equipment, and supplies. Marvin was in the Air National Guard from September 10, 1948 to September 10, 1950 where he was with the 8117th Air Base Squadron, Will Rogers Field, Oklahoma City as senior construction equipment operator 55151. Then he was in the Air Force from October 10, 1950 to January 29, 1952 with the 137th Installations Squadron, Alexandria Municipal Airport, Alexandria, Louisiana. In 1956 Marvin went to work for Warren Petroleum Company in Maysville. In 1963 he transferred to Crane, Texas and in 1969 to Lovington, New Mexico then in 1983 he was transferred back to the Maysville gasoline plant. Marvin retired in 1988 from Chevron/Texaco Company as an engine analyzer. Marvin road the Delta Transit to the Purcell Senior Citizens, where he enjoyed playing dominoes and having lunch. Marvin was a member of the First Baptist Church in Norman where he was a volunteer, working with the Homebound Ministry, The Clothes Closet Ministry, and the Family Life Center. He attended the Acquila & Priscilla Sunday School Class. Marvin was a member of the Purcell Masonic Lodge #27 in Purcell where he received a 50 years pin in 2007. He was a 32nd degree member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry in Guthrie. Survivors include his wife Omeda Lawson of the home in Purcell. A son, Phillip K. Lawson and his wife Sandra Diane Lawson of Trophy Club, Texas. 2 Grandchildren: Bryce Kyle Lawson, student at OU, Norman. Courtney Diane Lawson, student at OU, Norman. Sister-in-law, Carol Lawson of Columbia, South Carolina. Mother-in-law, Maggie Kay of Elmore City. Brother-in-law, Carl Kay of Elmore City. Nephews: Reg Hopper and wife Susan of Lakewood, Colorado; Ron Hopper and wife Vivien of Bakersfield, California; Joe Lawson and wife Elizabeth of Columbia, South Carolina; John Lawson and wife Nan of Alexandria, Virginia; and Charles S. Dayhoff III and wife Jocelyn of Dunedin, Florida. Nieces: Gwen [Hopper] Hanson and husband Tom of Las Cruces, New Mexico; Amy [Lawson] Spigner and husband Terry of Hopkins, South Carolina; and Sharon Lynne Dayhoff of Overland Park, Kansas. Marvin was preceded in death by his parents Marvin Bishop Lawson, Sr. and Margie Pearl [Gassaway] Lawson; sisters: Dorothy Hopper, Bernice Dayhoff, and Thelma Nisewander; brother Roy Lawson; brother-in-laws: Frank Hopper, Charles Dayhoff, and Ralph Nisewander; and father-in-law Marvin B. Kay. In lieu of flowers the family ask that donations be made to the Antioch Cemetery Fund or Baptist Children's Homes. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am, Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at Winans Funeral Home Chapel, Maysville, OK with burial in the Antioch Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm, Monday, February 24, 2014 at Winans Funeral Home. |
