Zion Lutheran Cemetery


February 24, 1891 - July 10, 1987

P. W. "Bill" Gerken, 96, a long-time resident of Fairmont, died early Friday at an Enid nursing home after a long illness. Funeral will be at 2:30 PM Sunday at Zion Lutheran Church in Fairmont with the Rev. Andy Keltner officiating. Burial will follow at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery, directed by Brown Funeral Home.

The casket will be open at the church Sunday from 1 PM until service time.

He was born February 24, 1891, in Canton, Kansas, and at an early age moved with his parents to the Fairmont community. He farmed in that area until retiring in 1945. He then moved into the town of Fairmont.

Gerken and Emma Frickenschmidt were married August 22, 1912, in Fairmont. She died November 27, 1983.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church since 1897, and was confirmed in 1905. He also was a member of the Mens Club and the Lutheran Layman's League and held several offices on the church council.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Oscar (Florence) Reinhardt, Enid, Mrs. Henry (Ethel) Bode, Fairmont, and Mrs. Jim (Lucille) McShane, Edmond; a son, Arnold, Fairmont; 15 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Joe, Aurora, Colorado; and a sister, Bertha Nobis, Fairmont.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, four sisters, a grandson, a granddaughter and two great – granddaughters.

Memorials may be made to the Lutheran Hour through the funeral home.
