Funeral services for Harris Russel Underwood, 89, Waukomis, will be Monday, August 1, 2005 at 10:30 AM in Waukomis Christian Church with Rev. Paul Hopkins officiating. Burial will follow in Waukomis Cemetery under the direction of Brown – Cummings Funeral Home. Full military graveside rites will be conducted by the Disabled American Veterans Oklahoma City Chapter #85.
Mr. Underwood was born on September 30, 1915 in Drummond, Oklahoma, the son of George C. And Frankie Chestnut Underwood and died early Friday morning, July 29, 2005 at his home. He was raised in Drummond until the fifth grade when he moved with his family to Waukomis where he graduated from Waukomis High School with the class of 1933. He worked as a mechanic and, in 1941, enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served his country during World War I I. He was a B-17 Bomber Pilot, flying 19 missions and also dropped food supplies over Belgium after the war. He was honorably discharged in 1947 with rank of Captain. Mr. Underwood married Lois Brown on October 6, 1945 in New Straitsville, Ohio. He attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University where he studied watchmaking. Later Mr. Underwood was the Waukomis Postmaster from 1961 until retirement in 1981. He was a member of Waukomis Christian Church, Waukomis Lions Club, 96th Bomb Group, Disabled American Veterans, and retired postmasters.
