The service honoring the life of Bobby E. Roades, 89, of Waukomis, will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 17, 2017, in the Waukomis Cemetery Chapel with Pastor Bud Laubach officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the National Guard. Services are under the direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home.
He was born May 23, 1928, to Merrill and Vera Aline Irvin Roades in Taloga, OK, and passed away October 13, 2017. His family moved to Waukomis in 1937. He graduated from high school in 1946. He enlisted in the 45th National Guard and worked at the Enid armory. He married Billie Marie Cox on June 30, 1950. A few days later, the 45th was deployed to the Korean War. In 1960, they purchased the Landwehr Chevrolet building on Main St and opened Roades Garage. In the 60's Bob became chief of the volunteer fire department, helping the department form an association to include rural fire protection and raise money to buy a pumper truck. He also helped form the town planning commission and served on it for many years.
In 1970, Bob and Doc Isbell started the Sooner Celebration, bringing fun activities and a huge parade to the town. They worked year round to bring participation from around the state. The town honored Bob as Grand Marshall of the Sooner Celebration parade in 2016. Bob taught mechanics at Vo Tech for several years, and then returned back to his garage and business in Waukomis. A few years later, Bob was appointed Waukomis Tag Agent and moved the tag agency to Main Street. Not only would he sell you a tag, but he would put it on your car. He and Billie worked long days keeping up with the demands of selling tags. Remember when all tags had to be purchased in December? Throughout the years, they collected and restored antique cars, emphasizing on orphan cars, belonging to many car clubs and participating all over the United States. For 67 years of marriage, Billie was by his side through all of his endeavors.
Bob is survived by wife Billie, daughter Vickie, son Robert (Carol), granddaughter Lacey (Jeff) great-grandson Cole, of Katy, Texas.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude's with Brown-Cummings Funeral Home serving as custodians of the funds.
