Waukomis Cemetery


Mass of Christian Burial for Wilma Ann Markes, 77, will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Bison. Burial will be in Waukomis Cemetery. Arrangements are by Henninger-Allen Funeral Home. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

She was born April 11, 1929, in Hennessey to John and Emma Fuksa Matousek and died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2006, at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center.

She graduated from Hennessey High School in 1947, and received her nursing degree from St. Mary’s Nursing School in 1950. She was a nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital. She married Melvin Markes Aug. 1, 1950, in Hennessey. They made their home on a farm near Bison before moving to Waukomis in 1982. She was a member of Altar Society at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Bosom Buddies Support Group and Bison Homemakers Club.

Surviving are her husband Melvin, of the home; six daughters, Kathy Grim of Fairview, Debbie McClurg, Amy Gragg and Margie Lovell, all of Waukomis, Sharon Crane of Enid and Susan Garrett of Tulsa; three sons, Leroy Markes of Enid and Kenny Markes and Patrick Markes, both of Bison; one brother, Ernest Matousek of Hennessey; 20 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to Hospice Circle of Love, American Cancer Society or St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Bison.

ENID — Mass of Christian Burial for Melvin J. Markes, 84, will be 10 a.m. Monday, November 12, 2012, at Bison Catholic Church. Father Jim Mickus and Father Joseph Arledge will officiate. Burial will be in Waukomis Cemetery. Visitation with family will be 6-7 Sunday at Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.

Melvin was born and raised on the family farm in Waukomis, OK, July 29, 1928, to Clarence and Barbara (Brauner) Markes and died at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center November 8, 2012.

He graduated from Waukomis High School in 1946.

He started farming on his own in 1946. He built houses with his brother, Andrew, from 1948-1959 and custom-combined from 1960-1964. He retired from farming in 1980.

On August 1, 1950, Melvin married Wilma Ann Matousek. They lived on the farm until 1982, when they moved to Waukomis.

Survivors include children, Leroy Markes of Enid, OK, Sharon Crane (Scott) of Enid, OK, Susan Garrett (Kent) of Tulsa, OK, Amy Gragg (Tod) of Waukomis, OK, Margie Lovell (Brian) of Waukomis, OK, Kathy Grimm Cunningham (Lowell) of Fairview, OK, Debbie McClurg (Mike) of Waukomis, OK, Kenny Markes of Bison, OK, and Patrick Markes (Kathy) of Bison, OK; 21 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Ernest Matousek; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Wilma; sister, Anna Marie Conway; and brother Andrew Markes.
