Dr. James Gilbert Hromas, passed away on Oct. 12, 2015, at the age of 70. He was born on Dec. 16, 1944, in Omaha, Neb., to Thomas and Nita (Webb) Hromas. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Kathi Raun (Stillwater), and his daughter, Lindy Raun Hromas (Lund, Sweden); his sister, Steva and her husband, Rob Krier and their sons, Matt and Philip (Edmond). Other surviving relatives include Ned and Essie Raun, father-in-law and mother-in-law (Tulsa), and Kathi’s brothers Rich, Ed and Bill and sister Barby Kroening and their families; and best friends, Michael S. and Rae Hyatt (Fort Worth, Texas).

Outside of the work place the things Jim loved included Lindy’s dance recitals, playing golf, traveling internationally, story-telling with friends, family reunions, eating at great restaurants, watching OSU football, appreciating fast cars, cooking, being with his Phi Delta Theta fraternity brothers (friends for life) and sitting by the pool with his bulldog, Max.

Jim graduated from Waukomis High School and was a trumpet player in the band. He loved music and theater. He graduated from OSU with a B.S. in accounting (1967), his MBA (1970), and his Ph.D. in marketing (1982). He was a member of the Oklahoma Army National Guard, Honorable Discharge, 1973.

Following Jim’s graduation from OSU, he worked for AMOCO Corporation in Tulsa, Okla., (1968) and then in the Fraternity Affairs office at OSU. In 1969 he moved to Houston, Texas, and became a management analyst for the NASA Johnson Spacecraft Center. He returned to OSU and was assistant director of OSU Business Extension in the College of Business in 1970 and later served as director, 1980-89. He was assistant professor, marketing in 1984 and promoted to associate professor in 1989. He became director of University Extension in 1991 and dean in 1994. In 1997, he became dean, University Extension, International and Economic Development and served as dean and director of the School of International Studies from 1998-2004. He was director of International Education and Outreach and director of the School of International Studies from 2004-2010. He became the Lawrence L. Boger Professor of International Studies at OSU in 2010 and retired that same year.

Jim served on the board of directors for the University Continuing Education Association, 1999-2001, 2007-10 and board of directors, Sister Cities International 2006-10 and as secretary, 2007-10. He served on the NASULGC executive committee 1994-2000 and chair, 1999-2000. He served on the governor’s EDGE Task Force in 2004. Most notable of Dr. Hromas’ achievements was his consistent role as a catalyst for growth and development of Stillwater and OSU. He was Stillwater Chamber of Commerce board member, 1989-95, and chair, 1994-95.

He was chapter advisor and Phi Delta Theta Building Corporation, board of directors, 1970-90; and president, 1975-85 receiving the Samuel V Stone National Adviser of the Year. He was Leadership Stillwater chair Founding Committee and chair 1983-84 and 1991-92; Leadership Oklahoma vice president and class member, 1992-93, founding board member, 1987-93; Stillwater United Way, OSU chair, 1988-89; Stillwater YMCA board of directors, 1986-87 and Stillwater International Tours Inc. board of directors, 1982-84. He served on the Zayed University, United Arab Emirates, College of Business Sciences International advisory council from 1998-2004.

Jim’s awards included the Walton S. Bittner Service Citation for Outstanding Service to UPCEA Award in 2008, OSU Arts & Sciences Center for Africana Studies and Development Appreciation Award, 2007; OSU School of International Studies Student Commitment Award, 2006; Maestro Honorifico by UPAEP, 2006; and Global Vision Award, OSU Global Agriculture Organization in 2004.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Nita Hromas.

The memorial service for Jim will be held at the OSU Wes Watkins Center at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2015, in the WWC auditorium. John Talley, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, will be the officiant of the service. Jim will be buried at Waukomis Cemetery, Waukomis, Okla. Donations may be made to the OSU Foundation designating the Dr. James G. Hromas Distinguished Graduate Fellowship in the OSU School of International Studies payable to the OSU Foundation, 400 S. Monroe, Stillwater, OK 74074.
