John Duncan, Pioneer Gone

Funeral services for Mr. John Sherman Duncan were held Sunday afternoon from the Bethlehem Baptist church and were attended by an unusually large crowd. Rev. Oscar Martin, pastor, conducted the services and the remains were interred in the Waukomis cemetery.

John Sherman Duncan, the son of Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Duncan, was born January 2, 1865, near Big Springs in Douglas co., Kans., and departed this life on April 28, 1933, at the age of 68 years, 3 months and 26 days. Mr. Duncan had been in failing health for several years, a helpless invalid the past few months, and death came as a blessed relief from hours of pain and suffering.

Mr. Duncan spent his boyhood years at the place of his birth and on December 25, 1884, he was united in marriage to Miss Rebecca Miller. In February 1891, they came to El Reno, Okla., and on September 16, 1893, he made the run into the Cherokee Strip and homesteaded the claim eleven miles southeast of Enid which has been his home for forty years.

He leaves to mourn their loss his devoted wife with whom he lived for almost half a century, one daughter, Mrs. Nellie Overstreet, wife of Andy Overstreet of Beaver City, Okla., three sons, Harley and Bert of Stevensville, Mont., and Howard of McCall, Idaho. Also four grandchildren and four great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Minnie Painter of Topeka, Kans., and one brother, Edward Duncan of Fontana, Calif.; a brother Mills Duncan of Lawrence, Kans., preceded him in death on November 21, 1932.

Mr. Duncan will long be remembered by a host of loving relatives and friends. Always of a kind, happy disposition, he was a friend to all who knew him, especially to all children.

Those from a distance attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Claypool, Mrs. Etta Bursaw and Mrs. Louise Kreipe, and Mr. Fred Painter from Douglas co., Kans.; and his granddaughter and grandson, Mrs. Gerald Wagner and Glen Overstreet of Beaver City.

Mr. and Mrs. Andy Overstreet and son Clifford, have been at the Duncan home for some time rendering loving care to Mr. Duncan in his last illness. It was impossible for any of the sons to attend the funeral, but the eldest son Harley, visited his parents in March.
