Waukomis Cemetery


Funeral service for James C. Cockrell, 74, of Waukomis, Okla., will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, 2015, at Brown-Cummings Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Pat Sutherlin will officiate.

Burial will follow at Waukomis Cemetery, with military graveside honors conducted by the Silver Talon Honor Guard.

He was born March 10, 1940, to Howard and Ocia (Baker) Cockrell in Mayfield, Ark., and passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2015, in Enid.

He moved with his family as a child to the Oklahoma City area. He graduated from Capitol Hill High School.

He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1958, where he served in communications all over the world and was a Vietnam Veteran. He also served with the United Nations in the Congo.

He married Lois “Sandy” Underwood in 1971, at Vance Air Force Base Chapel. He retired from the Air Force in 1979, after serving his country for 21 years. He received numerous accommodations and medals with one Bronze star being among them.

He worked as a flight simulator technician at Vance Air Force Base for 35 years, retiring in December 2014.

He belonged to the Waukomis Lion’s Club, the Waukomis Christian Church and the Underwood Coffee Club. He was an avid reader, loved woodworking, and looked forward to fishing in retirement.

He is survived by his wife, Lois of the home; son, Steve Cockrell and wife Tawnia of San Antonio, Texas; daughters, Patricia J. Canaan and husband Robert C. of Stillwater, Okla., Sandra Hayes and husband Russell of Tyler, Texas, Sarah Sweger and husband Pete of Edmond, Okla., Laurie Hood and husband Earl of Willow, Okla., and Barbara Gilbreath of Oklahoma City; grandchildren, Samia, Sarah, Brendan, Kristen, Madelyne and James; sisters, Wanda and husband Jim Mitchell of Del City, Okla., and Rita McDaniel of Katy, Texas; mother-in-law, Lois Underwood of Waukomis, Okla.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, John.

Memorials may be given to the Arthritis Foundation or Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation with Brown-Cummings serving as custodian of the funds.
