Funeral services for Mrs. L. Mae Jackson Atherton, 79, 1108 E. Park, have been set for 2 PM Wednesday in the First United Methodist Church. Officiating ministers will be Dr. John Russell and Dr. Robert J. Smith with burial to follow in the Waukomis Cemetery. Brown Funeral home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Atherton died Monday following an illness of several months. She was born in Lafayette, Illinois, and came to a farm near Waukomis with her parents Morey and Luna White Jackson in 1907. Mrs. Atherton was a business woman and was employed in New Mexico from 1917 to 1919. In 1919 she came to Enid to reside with her parents in the family home at 807 W. Broadway.
She was a pioneer in many departments of the church and helped to organize and was a charter member of the Business Girls Club, which later became the Wesleyan Service Guild. She was employed in the Garfield County Agent's office for several years.
Mrs. Atherton then became secretary for the First United Methodist Church for eight years. She then moved to Waukomis in 1934. She was married to Fred Atherton in 1936 and he preceded her in death in 1953.
Mrs. Atherton was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Circle 3 of the church and the Women's Prayer Group.
Survivors include one nephew, Frances Hill, Ada; two nieces, Mrs. Florence Arbutnot, Boulder, Colorado, and Mrs. Marjorie Kanous, Ft. Collins, Colorado, one step son, Franklin Atherton, Waukomis.
A Memorial fund has been established at the First United Methodist Church in recognition of Mrs. Atherton's many years of work with the youth of the church.
