Dr. Tommy "Thomas" Francis Smith, 83, passed away on a Sunday in Enid, Oklahoma.
Tommy was born September 10th, 1938, in Altus, Oklahoma, to Ivan and Tommie Lucille (Holmes) Smith.
He graduated from Olustee High School in 1957, enlisted in the Oklahoma Army National Guard in 1956 and then transferred to the Texas Army National Guard 1957-1958 while attending the University of Texas in Arlington, Texas, for Pre-Med. Tommy worked his way through college selling ballpoint pens, mastering his skills in sells, and as a cook grilling the best steaks and making the best omelets in the world.
In 1963, Thomas graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic, Davenport, Iowa, and started his first practice in Fairview, Oklahoma. He was involved in many civic organizations and was a member of the Fairview Auxiliary Police Department.
In 1975 Thomas called Enid home. Smith Chiropractic, D.C., sponsored many numerous civic organizations and committees over the years as a member, chairman, secretary/treasurer, officer, vice-president and/or president.
Thomas received several awards from various groups across the United States, including the Board of Trustees for Columbia Institute of Chiropractic and an award of Merit from the Practitioner's Study Group of Great Britain; Royal honor and title of BARON bestowed by BMA Inc.; Doctor of the Year - Joint Chiropractic Association of Oklahoma; Governor's Commendation; Chiropractor of the Year - Fellowship of Chiropractic Physicians; Elected Honorary member of Chiropractic Hall of Fame and Meritorious Achievement Award from Clinic Masters.
Thomas also served as Vice President, Governor's Board of Chiropractic Examiners under Governor David Walters, and President, Governor's Board of Chiropractic Examiners, under Governor Frank Keating.
Thomas was preceded in death by his parents Ivan Smith Sr. and Sarah; Tommie Lucille and Dr. R.C. Catlin; a sister Phyllis Bryan; and a great-niece Danielle Benitez.
He is survived by a daughter, Tamara Ballard and husband Phillip Sr.; sons, Dean Smith, Thomas Smith II and wife Bryanne; a brother, Ivan Smith Jr. and wife Katheran. He also is survived by his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces.
Thomas always had great work ethics. He always said, "Work while you can because there may come a day you can't." He loved and lived for work.
Thomas was laid to rest at Memorial Park Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers the family ask to donate to your favorite charity.
