The funeral service for Melvin J. Polwort, 93, will be at 2 p.m. Monday, April 6, 2009, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. The Rev. Kenneth Wade will officiate. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery . Arrangements are by Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.
Melvin died Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at Greenbrier Nursing Home. Melvin was born in Fairmont, Okla., Oct. 1, 1915, to Martha Carstens Polwort and Julius Polwort.
He grew up in Fairmont, graduating from Pioneer High School in 1934. After high school, he worked at Monroe Lang Hardware Store in Perry until joining the Army Jan. 13, 1942.
During World War II, Melvin served as a staff sergeant, working as a radar mechanic with the 316th Flight Squadron. He served in northern Africa, Italy, France, Germany and Central Europe until he was discharged in October 1945.
He returned to Perry after the war and married Vita Dautenhahn on Nov. 18, 1945.
They moved to Enid, where he worked as a U.S. mail carrier and the personnel director at St Mary's Hospital.
He earned a degree from Phillips University in June 1960 and worked as a medical technologist for Northwest Oklahoma Medical Pathologists for 25 years until he retired in 1981.
After retiring, Melvin became an accomplished oil painter and taught painting at the senior citizens center. He also served as the treasurer for Enid Art Association for many years. He was a devoted member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, serving in many offices within the church. Melvin spent devotional time with his Lord and Savior daily.
He was a loving father and grandpa and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Surviving are his children, Holly Lundberg and husband Forrest of Boulder, Colo., and his son, Richmond Polwort and wife Susan of Enid; three grandchildren, Danelle McBride and husband Steve, Brent Polwort and wife Jeanice, and Liesel Polwort; two great grandchildren, Justin McBride and Alexis Cooper . Also surviving are his brother, Don Polwort and two nieces of Tucson, Ariz.
Melvin was preceded in death by his wife, Vita, and daughter Janeen.
Memorials can be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home serving as custodian of the funds.
