Joan was born March 15, 1929, in Enid to Arthur and Grace (West) Nichols and passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 18, 2012, at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center. Joan married her best friend, Kenneth Petersen, June 1, 1947, and recently celebrated 65 years of marriage. Joan loved playing piano, working puzzles and was quite a seamstress, sewing many children's clothes with her label. She thoroughly enjoyed her grandchildren's sporting activities, attending their games with great support. Her special joy was her great-granddaughter, Kadri.
Though a charter member of Christ United Methodist, she attended Central Christian Church, where she was administrative secretary for more than 30 years. She also planned and helped with weddings.
Preceding her in death are her parents, and sisters Betty and Virginia. Left to celebrate her life are her husband, Kenneth; daughter, Susan and husband Jerry Kemph of Enid; son, Terry and wife Margaret of Portland, Ore.; and grandchildren, Ryan, wife Penny and daughter Kadri of Woodward, Tyler and wife Jennifer of Altus, Jared and fiancée Amanda of Enid, and Allison and Meredith Petersen of Portland, Ore.; brother, Jerry Nichols; sister, Linda Frieden; along with special niece, Mary Jo Duncan.
