ENID — C.E. (Bud) Loomis, Jr. passed away peacefully at home and joined his heavenly Father on July 22, 2010. Funeral services will be held at Central Christian Church on Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at 11 a.m. The Rev. John McLemore will officiate. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery . Arrangements are under the direction of Henninger-Hinson Funeral Home.
Mr. Loomis was born July 3, 1920 in Enid, Oklahoma, in a home at 1521 West Oklahoma, weighing only 3 lbs. at birth. He recalls fondly how his mother told him they kept him warm by stacking hot bricks around him.
Mr. Loomis was a lifetime resident of Enid and married to his wife Madge (Crow) Loomis for 68 years. Madge and Bud were married in Coffeyville, Kansas on May 30th, 1942.
Bud attended Enid public schools until he went to Oklahoma Military Academy in 1935 where he became the youngest airplane pilot in the United States at that time — (he was 16). After graduating from OMA he attended the University of Oklahoma and was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. When WWII broke out in his senior year he was immediately sent into service and soon became an instructor pilot for the U.S. Army Air Corps and was stationed at West Point Military Academy's Stewart Field, near Newburgh, NY, where he remained as captain and B-25 instructor pilot until the end of the war, when he returned to Enid to enter business with his father at C.E. Loomis Furniture Company and raise his family.
Bud was a longtime Enid businessman and owner/partner of the former C.E. Loomis Furniture Co., which served Enid and surrounding counties for over 71 years. He also owned and operated the Crescent Furniture Company, and Loomis Carriage House in Enid, and C.E. Loomis Furniture Co, in Alva, Oklahoma.
He was a leader of the community and involved in many areas, always helping promote Enid in anyway he could. He was a devout Christian and lifetime member of Central Christian Church where he was an Elder, Sunday school teacher, and member of the Sooner Class for over 50 years. He helped support and build the church in many ways throughout his life.
Bud headed many other organizations through his business career and later life:
He was a former president of the Enid Chamber of Commerce.
He headed the Enid Community Chest, was very involved in raising money for the YMCA and Phillips University.
He also headed the fund drive to raise money for the 'new' Bass Hospital.
As owner of C.E. Loomis Furniture he raised money each year for the Enid United Way and donated much of his time and money to many organizations throughout the community.
Due to his lifetime commitment to the Boy Scouts he was awarded the Silver Beaver Award, the Distinguished Service Award of the Boy Scouts of America due to his years of service and impact on the lives of youth.
Bud was a longtime member and former president of the Enid Rotary Club.
He was awarded Salvation Army's 'Citizen of the Year' in 1984.
He was a strong supporter of Enid Group Homes and they named Bud Businessman of the Year in 1985.
He was also chosen Oklahoma's Furniture Retailer of the Year in 1969.
He served the furniture industry throughout his life and was a longtime board member of the former Southwest Home Furniture Association.
He loved to take his family on amusing and enlightening journeys to see the country and the many historical places he so admired, and also to spend time each year at his beloved cabin in Colorado where he loved to fish and picnic in the summer and ski in the winter and where he could enjoy the Rocky Mountains with his family and many close friends. Bud lived life with gusto, was an avid OU fan and dedicated to his beloved wife, Madge, his family, and church. He also was blessed with an incredible number of good friends he loved and cherished. Bud was optimistic, never complained, and always had a positive attitude towards life. He had a great heart, enormous faith and loved to have fun. He made all feel special with his warm smile and winning ways.
Mr. Loomis was preceded in death by his father and mother, Mr. & Mrs. C.E. Loomis, Sr., and his sisters, Mildred (Middy) Jacobs Langenbartel and Ms Lorine Loomis Webber.
He is survived by his wife, Madge, of the home, and his three children, Nan Loomis Miller and her husband, Ken of Oklahoma City, Kim Loomis Irwin and her husband, Dean of Houston, Texas and Court Loomis III and his wife, Klista of Trophy Club, Texas. He also is the proud Daddy-Bud to his four grandchildren, Tracy Butts, Chip Bruce, Chance Irwin, and Court (Ceth) Loomis IV and his six great-grandchildren, Nathan & Nichols Butts, Brett & Michelle Bruce, and Addie Scott & Bebe Irwin.
He also is survived by nephews Mike Webber of Chipita Park, Colo., and Randy Jacobs of Palmer Lake, Colo.; nieces Mickey Webber Wallace of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Nancy Jacobs Holden of Enid, Okla., along with their many family members and the large number of close friends throughout Enid and the world.
The Loomis family also would like to thank the caring people that did so much to help take care of Bud in his final days. Very special thanks to Jo George, Marilyn Rogers and her son, Larry Smith.
It was indeed a joy and blessing to know Bud Loomis and he will be missed immeasurably by all who knew him.
In Lieu of flowers the Loomis family requests that donations be made in Bud's memory to his lifelong church, Central Christian Church in Enid.
