Nell Elizabeth Barber Lee was born Jan. 22, 1909, in Grant County near Lamont to George W. and Mary Belle Santee and entered into rest Sunday, Oct. 28, 2007, at Gold Oaks Nursing Center.
She completed her high school education in Pond Creek in 1927. After graduating from Stephens College, Columbia, Missouri, she attended the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, N.M., the University of Oklahoma, and received her bachelor of science degree in education from Phillips University in 1931.
Her teaching career covered a span of 37 years and included positions in Jet, Garber, Tonkawa, Lamont and Hennessey high schools, where she taught English, Spanish and drama. Her special gift to her students was her ability to inspire them to discover the beauty of literature and poetry. After her retirement in 1970, many of her former students remained in close contact with her, and these relationships became the highlight of her retirement years.
She married Keith H. Barber May 23, 1937, in Lamont. They resided in Garber and Hennessey, where they were active in the Senior Citizens Center and Meals on Wheels. After Keith’s death in 1986, she continued to live in Hennessey, where she was active in the Needle Club and the Senior Citizens Center. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Hennessey and was a charter member of the Church’s Wesleyan Service Guild. She was a member of the Oklahoma Retired Teachers Association.
On Oct. 1, 1994, she married Harold Lee in Enid, where they established a residence at Golden Oaks Retirement Village. Harold died in 1998.
She is survived by one sister, Mary Margaret Adams and husband Erle of Tulsa; several nieces and nephews; three step-children; and three great-nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands and three brothers.
The family wishes to pay tribute to Hospice Circle of Love for their compassionate and loving care and to Sandra Lorenz and Kathy Pearson, special friends and caretakers.
