Sheryl grew up and attended school in Enid. At the age of 15, he met and fell in love with the “ravishing” Mary Gates. They were married Aug. 1, 1950, and 60 years later he still thrilled at the sight of her and the touch of her hand.
At age 15, he also shared an important event with his twin brother, Jerryl, when they lied about their age and joined the army. He served an impressive career both in the Army and National Guard and retired as a Master Sgt in 1994. He also followed his father in owning and operating Chodrick’s Barber Shop for over 50 years. He worked there many long days up to the day before he entered the hospital four weeks ago. He was co-founder with Jack Cisco of the Barber’s Association and was past president of that organization. He was a former member of Abundant Life Temple Church, where he served as Sunday School teacher, superintendent and choir member. For the past many years, he and his family have been members of First Assembly of God.
He is survived by his wife, Mary, of the home; two sons, Charles M. Chodrick and wife Brenda of Enid and Chris A. Chodrick and wife Eva of Sacramento, Calif.; one daughter, Carla M. Detwiler and husband Rob of Enid; two nephews, Bobby Eubanks and wife Robin of Edmond and Kelly Spencer and wife Alison of Kennett, Mo.; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and twin brother, Jerryl Wayne Chodrick of Norman.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Jeanine Wasemiller.
His life exemplified true manhood in every way. He never thought of himself first, but always was loving and giving to others. He was a soldier, a patriot, a leader, but above all he was a servant. A servant to the God he worshiped and the family he loved. Family to him never meant bloodlines, it was about love and he gave his love abundantly to everyone. He loved his Lord Jesus and walked with him as friends. His worn Bible and hymnal testify of the many hours he spent reading, singing and praying. Often, he was found on his knees at his bedside, peacefully asleep. He continually proclaimed what a blessed man he was, thanking God for his family and friends. His one burden and last wish was that everyone he loved would know and walk with his Jesus as he had.
