Mennonite Brethren Cemetery


The funeral service for Bertha Ann Toews will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2009, at Enid Mennonite Brethren Church. Pastor Garvie Schmidt will officiate. Burial will be in Enid Mennonite Cemetery with arrangements made by Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home. Visitation with the family will be 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Bertha was born Jan. 13, 1932, in Enid, Okla., to Jacob J. and Anna (Voth) Thesman and died Thurs-day, Sept. 17, 2009, at her home.

She graduated from Kremlin High School in 1949. She married David Alfred "Calvin" Toews Oct. 16, 1952.

After high school, she attended St. Anthony's Nursing School and graduated with her nursing degree in 1951. She worked at The Methodist Home in Enid for 18 years as an assistant administrator and director of nursing. She then worked for Concentra for 16 years as a medical records auditor.

Surviving are her sons, Jason Toews and wife Charlotte and James David "Jim" Toews, all of Enid; grandchildren, Justin Toews and wife Amy of Vici, Okla., and Ginger Halsrud and husband Chris of Goodyear, Ariz.; and great-granddaughter, Addison Halsrud. She also is survived by sister, Gladys Regehr of Inman, Kan.; sisters-in-law, Sophia Thesman of Kremlin and Leora Thesman and Sarah Toews, both of Enid; brothers-in-law, George Toews and wife Mabel and Joel Toews, all of Enid. She also is survived by her special friends, Paula Butcher of Dennison, Texas, and Kenneth Buchanan of Enid; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and three brothers.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to Caring Bridge and Horn of Plenty.
