ENID, Okla. — Funeral service for Helen E. "Betty" Skaggs, 95, of Enid, will be 10 a.m. today at Enid Bethel Baptist Church. Pastor Wesley Byrd will officiate. Burial will follow in Hillsdale Cemetery . Service is entrusted to Brown-Cummings Funeral Home.
She was born Dec. 12, 1917, to Ralph and Myrtle Harris in Caldwell, Kan., and went to be with her Lord Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012.
She graduated from Alva High school in 1936.
While working in a soda shop across from the college, she was overheard by a young man as she was telling her girlfriend that "if she ever got married, it would be to a rich farmer." Her husband-to-be replied that "he wasn't rich, being only a student, but was the best farmer in Oklahoma." She married Robert Merritt Skaggs in 1942.
In 1946, after WWII, they moved to Hillsdale , built a service station, and farmed.
She was a member of Beta Signu Phi and a lifetime member of Hillsdale Bible Church, where she and Merritt taught Bible class.
She belonged to Hillsdale Development Corps, which had part in developing the Hillsdale Christian School.
She helped organize two women's clubs and was a member of Eastern Star. She was involved in many charities.
She moved to Enid in 1955, and later joined the Bethel Baptist Church.
She is survived by two sons, Robert and Kendall, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband on Jan. 31, 1986, one brother and three sisters.
Memorials may be made in her name to Bethel Baptist Church and Hillsdale Christian School with Brown-Cummings Funeral Home serving as custodian of funds.
