The funeral service for Vernita J. Wheeler, 78, will be 2 p.m. Friday, May 15, 2009, at Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Mike Sommerfeld will officiate. Burial will be in the Enid Cemetery .
Vernita was born April 29, 1931, to Waldo and Elvira (Smallwood) Milam in Pauls Valley, Okla., and died Monday, May 11, 2009, in Enid, Okla., after a long illness.
She lived most of her life in Enid, where she worked as a field hand and later as a nurse aide and raised her seven children.
She married Richard Salladay in 1947 and had three children. After a divorce, she married Duane Wheeler in 1951 and had four more children and was with him until his death in 2005, after 54 years together.
She is survived by her children: Davy and Danny Salladay of Enid, Okla., Susan "Suzy" Owens of Delta, Colo., Kenneth Wheeler and wife Patricia of Ponca City, Okla., Shirley Dodson and husband Herbert of Enid, Okla., Randy Wheeler and wife Frankie of Enid, Tony Wheeler and wife Veta of Enid; one brother, Orvile Milam of Waukomis , Okla.; one sister, Emma Lee Emerson of Enid; 19 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Duane Wheeler; her parents, Waldo and Elvira Milam; one brother, Thurman Milam; one sister, Coy Mae Wendt; and one daughter-in-law, Alice Salladay.
