The funeral service for Jim Stroup, 87, Enid will be Thursday, Sept.20th, 2012 at 10:00 A.M. in Central Christian Church with Rev. John P. McLemore, Sr. and Rev. Don Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Enid Cemetery under direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home.
He was born July 29th, 1925 in Hutchinson, Kansas to James Harvey and Stella Pulley Stroup and died Sunday, September 16, 2012 in Greenbrier Nursing Home. He grew up in Woodward where he graduated from high school and was the quarterback for the football team .During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy where he managed to throw several touchdown passes, broke his leg on a trampoline, and was a standout when time came for round ball. He then went to O.S.U. as a walk on and got to play on the Henry Iba NCAA national championship team. Henry Iba called him “Wild Man”.
In 1949, he graduated from O.S.U. with a B.S. degree and married Paula Mayberry in October, 1949, a union which lasted 63 years.
He was a teacher and coach at Manitou, Okla. before coming to Enid. He coached at Enid High for 11 years beginning in 1950. Six of those years he was head basketball coach and in 6 years, Stroup teams won sate twice and runner-up once. That is the best post season basketball coaching record in EHS history. Then he moved to Muskogee where he was physical director of the YMCA. The next year, he became the head basketball coach of Phillips University until his retirement. He also earned his Master's degree at Phillips University.
He was a man whose first priority was aiding and educating young people. His players were known as “Jim's Boys”. He was a longtime and active member of Central Christian Church and the Enid American Legion.
His hobby was woodworking.
He is survived by his wife, Paula, two sons Alan and wife, Julie of Tulsa, Patrick of Tulsa, seven grandchildren, one step grandchild, five great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Diana, a seventeen month old daughter, two sisters, Loudine and Rosemary.
Memorials in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer Disease Research or Central Christian Church with Brown-Cummings serving as Custodian of the funds.
