Wanda J. Simmons, 46, died May 23 in Orlando, Florida following a brief illness.
Born Wanda Jean Watkins in Fremont, Nebraska, she moved to Enid with her family in 1953 and graduated from Enid high school in 1970. In 1973 she married Doug Simmons also a 1970 graduate of DHS. In 1978 while living in Louisville, Kentucky, she had a daughter, Elizabeth. She attended Oklahoma Baptist University, Jefferson Community College, and Kansas State University.
She spent time living in Kentucky, New Mexico, Kansas, Pennsylvania, and Missouri before moving to Florida in 1996, and was employed by Florida Hospital – Orlando as a unit Secretary. Wanda had worked in the medical support field for most of her adult life, and also did daycare in her home at times. She home – schooled her daughter, Elizabeth, through both elementary and secondary school years.
She is survived by her husband, Doug, and her daughter, Elizabeth, of Winter Park, Florida, her mother and step – father, Delores and John Burkey of halfway, Missouri, brothers Kim and Robert Watkins of Enid, sister Carol Rust also of Enid, and brother Mike Watkins of Halfway, Missouri, and their families. Other survivors include her mother – in – law and her husband, Marilyn and D. Ellis Kincannon of Enid, father – in – law and his wife, Archie and Phyllis Simmons of Portland, Oregon, and brothers – in – law Randy and Rusty Simmons and their families.
A Memorial service was held in Orlando Florida on May 29 at College Park Baptist Church. Graveside service and interment of cremains is scheduled for 11 AM Saturday, June 19, at Enid Cemetery with Rev. Darrell Mock officiating.
