Aleene Alma Self was born Sept. 24, 1924, to Charles Oscar and Alma Berkenbile, on a farm eight miles east of Hennessey. She graduated from Lone Star School, located east of Hennessey, in 1942.
During WW II, Aleene worked in a war factory in Wichita, Kan., building B-17s, and she was an honored member of the American Rosie the Riveter Association.
Throughout her life, Aleene enjoyed traveling the world, but simply watering and pruning her flowers brought her just as much joy. She worked together with Don Self in his drugstore in Bethany for 23 years, before retiring to Edmond. She went to her family in Heaven on Sunday, Oct. 2, 2016.
She is survived by husband, Don Self, of the home; brother, Charles Vernon Berkenbile, of Celina, Texas; son, David Jones and wife, Patti, of Hennessey; son, Doyle Jones and wife, Roxann, of Hennessey; daughter, Donnis Moore and husband, Michael, of Denver, Colo.; daughter, Jacqueline Gooch, of Edmond; daughter, Deborah Olson and husband, Michael, of Phoenix, Ariz.; daughter, Becky Wade and husband, Kenneth, of Oklahoma City; 13 grandchildren, including Tabatha Scott and husband, Brandon, of Hennessey; Trisha Jones, of Stillwater; Amber Taylor and husband, Kyle, of Crescent; Philip Jones and wife, Jennifer, of Yukon; Lenzy Kerechek and husband, Mike, of Denver, Colo.; Lauren Hill and husband, Sam, of Edmond; Cameron Steele and Ellen, of Del City; Kendall Wade, of Tulsa; Stephen Gooch and Megan, of Edmond; Tommy Gooch and Cindy, of Edmond; Daniel Pullin and wife, Tamara, of Norman; Valerie Buckner, of Phoenix, Ariz.; and Allison Pullin, of Phoenix, Ariz.; 20 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, C.O. and Alma Berkenbile; brothers, Leland, Hollis and Delmar Berkenbile; sisters, Juanita Rogers and Irene States; one daughter, Donetta Self; two granddaughters, Kyla Jones and Chaunte' Self; and great-granddaughter, Kayman Rose Scott.
The funeral services is 10 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2016, at Matthews Funeral Home Chapel. Burial follows at 3:30 p.m. at Enid Memorial Cemetery.
