The funeral for Johnel Newton, 77, of Enid, will be 1 p.m. Saturday at First Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Edmond Rollins will officiate. Burial will be in Enid Cemetery. Arrangements are by Russworm Funeral Home of Enid.
She was born Sept. 25, 1929, in Eudora, Ark., to John and Alice Smith and died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006, in Oklahoma City.
She moved to Enid at an early age and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School.
She married Henry Newton Jr. Feb. 2, 1952.
She completed registered nursing studies at Northern Oklahoma College, Tonkawa, in 1978.
She worked for more than 20 years at Enid State School. After retiring, she worked at Meadowlake Hospital. She was a site manager with Wheatheart Nutrition Project.
She was a member of Grayson Missionary Baptist Church. She later moved her membership to St. Stephen African Methodist Church.
She was local president, area chairwoman and life member of Oklahoma Confer-ence Women’s Missionary Society. She was a member of Northern Light Chapter No. 59 Order of Eastern Star, Amos T. Hall No. 22 Heriones of Jericho, Johnel Newton Guild No. 16, Democratic Women’s Club and Inter Racial Women’s Club.
Surviving are one son, Gregory Newton of Denver; one daughter, Janet Newton of Edmond; two sisters, Lee Ethel Carr of Enid and Lela Mae McGill of Clinton; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry, one son, one granddaughter and 11 siblings.
