ANADARKO — Vaughndean Landes, 95, was born March 28, 1914, in Eddy, Okla., to Jesse A. and Ethel Amanda (Smith) Landes. She passed from this life on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010, at her home in Anadarko, following a lengthy illness.
Vaughndean grew up in Enid, Okla., and graduated from Enid High School. She moved to Anadarko and enrolled in the Anadarko Business College, graduating in 1941. During World War II, she served as Home Service Chairman for the Caddo County Chapter of the American Red Cross, and received her 30-year service pin in 1970. She worked in the Caddo County Courthouse before becoming a full partner and agent in the Baldwin Insurance Agency with Sen. Don Baldwin in 1947. She has been very active in Anadarko, serving as the State Business and Professional Women’s Club president in 1953 and was a member of the Anadarko Chapter until it closed.aughndean Landes, 95, was born March 28, 1914, in Eddy, Okla., to Jesse A. and Ethel Amanda (Smith) Landes. Governor Raymond Gary appointed her to the State Board of Mental Health in 1955, where she served until 1964. She also served on the Jim Taliaferro Community Health Center Board for six years. In 1956, she was the first woman ever elected as a delegate to the National Democratic Convention from Caddo County. She was the secretary-treasurer of the Anadarko Industrial Author-ity at its inception in May 1964. She was named Woman of the Year in 1972 by the Anadarko Chamber of Commerce. She worked very diligently to get the Sequoyah Carpet Mill industry to locate in Anadarko. She has been a very active member of the First United Methodist Church for the past 62 years. She was instrumental in the renovation of her church and the installation of an elevator there in 1999, and also the building of the Landes Family Life Center. Ms. Landes was a long-time member of the Crystal Revekah Lodge No. 97 and had served as Noble Grand. She had been a member of the Anadarko Hospital Auxiliary for 32 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her five siblings, Pearlene, Kenneth, Garland “Zip,” Truman and Ronald; nephew, Graham Landes; niece, Shirley Peterson; and great niece, Debbie Pittman.
Survivors are her beloved nieces and nephews, Javon Blankinship, and her children, Kathy McGahey and husband Michael; their children, Krystal Moore, Ashlyn Williams and her children, Jordan, Shelby and Aaryan; William Riggin and wife Laura; their son, Cole; Kristy Hudson and her husband Robert; their children, Brett, Jason, Chad and wife Misty and their daughter, Shyann; Bari Riggs and her son Ryan; and his children, Crimsun and Maddesun; Beau and wife Amber and their son, Kye; Kay Cordell and her children, Morris (Mac) McPherson and his sons, Michael and Mathew; Mark McPherson and wife Lisa and their children Faith and Ivey; Marcy Cordell, Donna White and her children, Brittney Herring and her son, Patrick; children of Jerrie Pittman and the late Mary Louise Pittman, Robert Pittman and wife Stephanie and their children, Benjamin and Avery Pittman, and Dr. John Pittman and wife Debbie and their children, Kimberly, David and Rachel; Rodney Pittman and wife Jerrie Ann and their children, the late Debbie Pittman, Eddie Pittman and wife Laura and their daughter, Carlie Pittman; children of the late Shirley Pittman Peterson, Karen Peterson and Kurt Peterson and his daughter, Angela; children of the late Graham Landes, Greg Landes and wife Crystal and their children, Taylor, Ryanne, Maggie and Ian; Theron Landes and wife Sarah and their children, Katelyn, McKenzie and Addison; Lisa Piechocki and husband Jon and their children, Noah and Whit; Sally Landes and her children, Lanna Beth and husband Mike Fitts and their children, AndeeBeth and Lincoln; Leatha Butler and husband Robby and their children, Landes and Hayden; Lee Thurman and wife Kandice and their children, Delia, Jade, Rhett, and Billee; LeArta Landes Watkins and husband Randall and their children, John Watkins and his son, Trey Dylan Watkins; Amy Watkins Rohr and husband Frank and their children, Eisley Jacqulynne Emery Aaralyn, and Amanda Elizabeth Watkins. She is also survived by thoughtful neighbors, loving friends and fellow church members.
Funeral service is 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, at First United Methodist Church of Anadarko, with former pastor, Chuck Gilbert and Pastor Tracy Schumpert officiating. Burial will follow in Enid Cemetery under the direction of Steverson Funeral Home of Anadarko. Viewing today from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. and Monday from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m
