Funeral rites for James W. Kerns, 82, 416 S. Third, will be at 2 PM Saturday in the Henninger – Allen Funeral Home with Rev. Archie Klusmeyer officiating. Burial will be in the Enid Cemetery.
Kerns died Wednesday in a local hospital after several months of ill health. He was born September 18, 1891, in Dallas County, Missouri, and moved with his parents to a farm near Waynoka in 1903. He lived there until moving to Enid in the 1930s.
He and Mattie E. Thomas were married December 11, 1942, in Winfield, Kansas, and made their home in Enid except for a short time spent in Perry.
He was a plasterer by trade until retiring in 1962.
Kerns was a veteran of World War I and was a member of the American Legion. He was preceded in death by his wife Mattie on January 14, 1969, and two step – daughters, Peggy Gipson in 1956 and Lorene Whittenberg in 1959.
Survivors are two step – daughters, Mrs. Phil (Barbara) Phelps of Fairmont and Mrs. Etcal (Mary) Griffith of Pomona, California,; three stepsons, Jonny Thomas of Garber, Gene Thomas of Hennessey and Ray Thomas of Chino, California; 23 grandchildren and several great – grandchildren.
