Pastor Gary Miller of Hospice Circle of Love and Pastor Richard Hardy (Rusty) Mosley of Westminster Presbyterian Church will co-officiate. Burial will follow in Enid Cemetery. Service is under direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home.

She was born Jan. 9, 1926, in Sugarloaf Township, Rooks County, Kan., to Earl R. Buss and Opal McComb Buss and passed away Dec. 11, 2014.

She attended Pleasant View Rural Grade School, then Webster High School, graduating salutatorian, with a Normal Training Certificate.

She married her high school sweetheart, Byron F. Carpenter, Aug. 11, 1942, celebrating 72-plus years of marriage. The most important part of their life wwere the three children, Bruce, Lynn and Dale, who came to bless their home.

Twila was baptized during her senior year in high school and joined the Methodist Church.

Byron started farming, and Twila taught at Brown Rural Grade School, Rooks County, Kan.

She taught two years and was the only one in charge. She got to the school early to start a fire in the potbelly, coal stove in the middle of the one-room school, and would then bring a bucket of coal from the coal shed to last all day. She made another trip to the well to get a bucket of water for the water fountain, swept the floor, and was ready for the kids when they began to arrive. There were 10 to 12 students, spanning nearly all eight grades.

As the farm grew, she quit teaching to work alongside Byron on the farm, a team that worked together for 66 years, until they retired and moved to Enid, Okla. One of the highlights of her life was the People to People tour to Russia, Czechoslovakia, Germany, Switzerland and England.

Twila learned to work at an early age. She was the oldest of four girls and became her dad’s main helper. Being of German descent, her dad was a perfectionist at the carpentry trade.

Twila carried forward this perfection in all she did. From her mother, she became an excellent cook.

She loved the farm, especially in springtime, helping to care for new calves, lambs and pigs. She always was extra arms and legs to help others. She was the cashier for the family’s auction business and real estate company.

She served many years in 4-H leadership positions and KSU Extension work. She loved gardening, kids’ activities, and flowers. She took an active part in traveling with her husband to his many board meetings, Rural Electric boards, local, state and national. She participated in ladies’ programs and activities. His meetings took them to many points of interest all across the country.

Twila is survived by her husband, Byron, of the home; one sister, Darlene Farr and husband Charles, Hays, Kan.; one brother-in law, De Vane Cunningham and wife Ellen, Stockton, Kan.; one daughter, Lynn Wagner and husband James, Kirksville, Mo.; one son, Dale Carpenter and wife Julie of Enid; grandchildren Dr. Jamie L.
