Douglas Union Cemetery


ENID — Funeral service for Karl Jacob North, 70, of Enid, will be 2 p.m. today, Jan. 8, 2011, at Christian Church of the Covenant with Rev. Pat Sutherlin officiating. Committal prayers will follow in Union Cemetery , Douglas, under the kind guidance of Stittsworth Funeral Service. Full military graveside rites will be conducted by Disabled American Veterans.

Karl was born Aug. 22, 1940, in Enid, the son of John Jacob and Ruby (Cooper) North and died Wednesday morning, Jan. 5, 2011, at Clinton Veterans Home.

He was raised on his parents' farm north of Douglas. Karl attended school in Douglas and graduated from Douglas High School with the class of 1959. He then attended the College of Technology of Oklahoma State University in Okmulgee. Karl graduated with an associate degree in diesel engineering.

He enlisted in the United States Navy and spent several years on the USS Kitty Hawk aircraft carrier, which is still in service today. Karl was injured on the Kitty Hawk when a wounded pilot made a crash landing after a combat mission in North Vietnam. Karl received a broken leg trying to save the plane.

He left the Navy and returned to his farm home north of Douglas. Karl continued to live on the farm after the death of his parents, where he raised cattle and grew wheat. In 2005, and due to failing health, Karl retired from farming and moved to Meadows Point Apartments in Enid. Karl was a member of Christian Church of the Covenant in Enid.

Karl never married and is survived by five sisters and four brothers. The sisters are Thelma Webb of Enid, Kathy Schurr of Fairborn, Ohio, Wilma North of Moore, Okla., Lou Geisinger of Perry, Okla., and Berneita Boesch of Blackwell. The brothers are John North of Henderson, Texas, Raymond North of Enid, Tommy North of Enid and Keith North of Salt Lake City, Utah. Many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Karl was predeceased by his parents and one sister, Nellie Jane North.

In memory of Karl, memorial contributions may be applied to Union Cemetery , Douglas, with Stittsworth Funeral Service coordinating.
