Burst Appendix Blamed In Girl's Death

A Garfield County medical examiner said Thursday he doubts the death of an eight – year – old Enid girl from a ruptured appendix was caused by the family's religious beliefs.

Enid police reportedly investigating whether Charity Randolph died because her parents religion prevented her from receiving medical treatment.

However, Doctor Samuel Price, who ordered an autopsy, said he does not believe religion was a factor in the girl's death.

The child was found dead in her family's home Wednesday morning by her parents, Danny and Sharon Randolph, 3880 Antelope.

"They don't have any aversions to going to doctors," Price said, adding that the family's two other children were examined by physicians Wednesday with the parents consent.

Price believes the parents did not realize how sick the girl had become.

A ruptured appendix usually "doubles you over with pain," Price said. "She did not experience any of those pains."

Charity became ill Sunday night and died shortly after 10 AM Wednesday, Price said.

Police officials have declined to discuss details of the investigation. However, a police spokesman said their inquiry is not complete, yet.

Sources said investigators asked for health records at the girl's school, Pioneer – Pleasantvale Elementary School.

Those records – which were denied to police without a search warrant – show the girl's family had asked that she be exempt from immunization laws for religious reasons, school sources said.

Other sources said the parents are members of a sect known as the Followers of Christ.

Charity reportedly missed the first week of school, which began Monday. Her brother, Steven, a fifth – grader, also missed several days of school, but the police said he suffered from only a mild fever.
