Edith F. and William B. SNYDER
Covington Cemetery
Edith Kirk Snyder's life will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 9, 2009, at Covington Christian Church and again at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009, in the chapel of First Christian Church in downtown Tulsa. Burial will be private in Covington Cemetery .
Edith was born in a little house on the prairie between Douglas and Fairmont, Okla., on Oct. 7, 1908, one year after Oklahoma's statehood. She was one of seven children born to W.C. and Ruth Fairfield Kirk. She passed away peacefully in Tulsa on Aug. 2, 2009, two months shy of her 101st birthday.
After graduating from Douglas High School, Edith then attended Oklahoma A&M College, now known as OSU. She received her teaching certification after two years and taught in one room-country schools for several years, including Harmony School in Noble County and Vernon and Del Norte schools in Garfield County.
She met her future husband, William B. (Bill) Snyder when she went to teach at Harmony School. She boarded with the Snyder family near Orlando whose land was called "school land" as the school was on the Snyder property. This land had been obtained by Bill's father, Martin, in the Oklahoma Land Run of 1889.
On May 27, 1933, Edith married Bill in Hennessey, Okla. They lived in Lucien for a short time and then moved to Covington, where Dick, Bruce and Helen were born. She and Bill were married for 61 years. Edith lived in Covington until 1998, when she moved to Tulsa after the loss of her eldest son.
She was an active member of Covington Christian Church and then Southside Christian in Tulsa, a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star and she served on the board of the Public Library of Enid and Garfield County for 13 years, helping to get the bond issue passed to build the present building. Last October, she became a member of Centenarian Club of Oklahoma.
Edith's faith, family and home were the most important ingredients in her life.
Surviving Edith are her son, Bruce and his wife Marcia of Williamsburg, Va.; a daughter, Helen O'Donnell of Baltimore, Md.; two grandchildren, Michael Snyder of Williamsburg and Jenny Nelson of Atlanta, Ga.; twin great-granddaughters, Sutton and Hadley Nelson of Atlanta; her sister, Jen Clausing of Tulsa; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Bill; her son, Dick; two brothers, Myrl and Lyle; and her sisters, Winnie and Daisy and her twin, Edrie.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Edith's name to the Public Library of Enid and Garfield County, 120 W. Maine, Enid OK 73701, for their genealogy area or to First Christian Church in Tulsa for the Dick Snyder Memorial Fund at 913 S. Boulder Ave. Tulsa, OK 74119. Arrangements are by Floral Haven Funeral Home, Tulsa, OK, (918) 252-2518.
