Alex William Meier son of Frederick and Eva Elisabeth (Wassenmiller) Meier was born March 29, 1892 in Lehigh, Marion Co., KS and died on January 6, 1957, in the Newman Memorial Hospital at Shattuck due to injuries received in an auto accident, at the age of 64 years, 9 months, and 8 days. Alex was injured in a 2 car collision 27 Dec, 1956 while accompanying Mrs. Sam Weitz and her two small sons to visit her husband in the hospital in Woodward. Alex died 10 days later on 6 Jan, 1957 of "Fat Embolism" due to compound fracture of the right tibia & right hip.
He came to Shattuck with his parents in March of 1901, where he spent the remainder of his life. He was employed by Cities Service Oil Co. for 35 years, until retirement in July, 1956, as a bulk agent. At an early age he was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church. In 1913, he was united in marriage to Miss Martha Batt. To this union were born two daughters, Irene and Esther. His wife, Martha, preceded him in death on July 2, 1920. On April 21, 1922, he was united in marriage to Miss Cassie Ehrlich. This union was blessed with two children, Floyd Calvin and Norma Jean. Norma Jean preceded her father in death on June 16, 1952, in an airplane crash near Anchorage, Alaska, while serving as a nurse with her husband, Dr. Roger Witzel, in the United States Health Service, where both perished in the service of their country.
He leaves to mourn his wife, Cassie (Ehrlich); 2 daughters: Mrs. Geo. (Irene) Laubhan of Russell, KS, and Mrs. Allen (Esther) Schoenhals of Shattuck and one son, Floyd Calvin Meier of San Diego, CA; nine grandchildren; 5 sisters: Mrs. Henry (Mollie) Meier, Mrs. Adam (Leah) Kerbs, Miss Ophelia Meier, and Mrs. Jake G. (Ruth) Ehrlich, all of Shattuck and Mrs. Holt (Olenda) Karst of Bremerton, WA; 3 brothers: Fred F. of Follett, TX; Jacob, and Alvin all of Shattuck, OK; and an uncle, Gottfred Wassenmiller of Shattuck, OK.
Services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, in the Shattuck Seventh Day Adventist Church with burial in the Shattuck Cemetery Sec. 28 Twp 21 R25, located on the south side of Shattuck, Ok along Hwy 283.
