Woodward, Okla.
Melvin Keeney, son of Dewey and Olive (Vincent) Keeney, was born on October 4, 1924 in Mutual, Oklahoma. He passed away on December 6, 2010 at the Saint Mary Regional Hospital in Enid, Oklahoma, at the age of 86 years.
He attended Mutual High School and graduated in 1943. He attended Phillips University at Enid before joining the Air Force. After returning from the Air Force he attended Oklahoma A & M and received his degree in Music Education in 1950. He received his Masters degree at North Texas and his Doctorate degree at the University of Oklahoma.
Melvin was united in marriage to Margaret Stuart on January 27, 1951 in Laverne, Oklahoma.
He taught school at Arnett, Fairview , Cameron University in Lawton, then on to Beaver and he retired from teaching while at Northwestern, in 1980. He loved to play golf and enjoyed going to OSU games. He was active in the First United Methodist Church, a past president of the Rotary Club, member of the American Legion and a 32 degree Mason.
He was preceded in death by his infant twin brother, Elvin Cleo.
He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret of the home; Kathryn Hughes of Woodward; Jim and Ava Keeney of Woodward, Oklahoma; five grandchildren: Austin and Callie Keeney, Erin Keeney, Stuart and Kimberly Otis, Tyler and Amanda Hughes and Emily Otis; two great - grandchildren: Aiden and Wyatt Otis and numerous other relatives and friends.
Memorials may be made to the Alva First United Methodist Church, 626 College Avenue, Alva, Oklahoma 73717, or to the charity of your choice. Memorial services will be held Thursday, December 9 in Alva, Oklahoma at the First United Methodist Church at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Terry N. Martindale officiating. Private interment was in the Shattuck Memorial Cemetery in Shattuck, Oklahoma with the Mason Funeral Home of Shattuck in charge of arrangements.
